Summertime Safety with Fire

6/13/2022 (Permalink)

camping fire Look at the wonderful fire made by our office manager; she removed flammable debris from the area of the fire and made sure everyone stayed safe!

Summertime brings about some of our favorite things; grilling, camping, and fireworks, but these activities all have dangers that we must be aware of. All these activities involve fire, which is no joking manner. If you’re planning on being around fire this summer, you must be prepared and well informed.

Grills

Grill fires are one of the leading causes of house fires. It’s important to make sure that your grill is properly cleaned often to prevent the igniting of food residue or leaked fuel. Your grill must be adequately spaced from your home and other flammable objects; manufacturers recommend ten feet minimum.

Campfires

We all love a s’more on a summer evening, but fire safety must not be forgotten. Always watch children and pets around fires, be careful when using an accelerant, and make sure flammable objects are far from the flames.

Fireworks

As we approach the Fourth of July, we start to see all the fun fireworks in stores. As a reminder, fireworks may be pretty, but they can be extremely dangerous. Be sure to keep fireworks away from your home or anything else that is flammable. Do not aim fireworks at yourself, another person, or your home. Please use the utmost caution when handling fireworks.

As always, our team here at SERVPRO of Vero Beach is here to help. Let’s have an amazing (and safe) summer!

Did you know not all smoke alarms are the same?

6/1/2022 (Permalink)

Smoke detector info graphic explaining the differences between the two Smoke detectors can look quite similar but function very differently.

Below are the two most commonly installed smoke detectors, according to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA):

  • Ionization smoke alarms are generally more responsive to flaming fires.

How they work: Ionization-type smoke alarms have a small amount of radioactive material between two electrically charged plates, which ionizes the air and causes current to flow between the plates. When smoke enters the chamber, it disrupts the flow of ions, thus reducing the flow of current and activating the alarm.

  • Photoelectric smoke alarms are generally more responsive to fires that begin with a long period of smoldering (called “smoldering fires”).

How they work: Photoelectric-type alarms aim a light source into a sensing chamber at an angle away from the sensor. Smoke enters the chamber, reflecting light onto the light sensor; triggering the alarm.

Preventing Dryer Fires in Your Gifford, FL Property

Some Things You Should Know About Smoke Alarms

5/2/2022 (Permalink)

Smoke alarm info graphic by SERVPRO Don't forget to test your smoke alarms monthly!

Smoke alarms can play a significant role in fire safety. Oftentimes, smoke alarms raise awareness of an existing fire before occupants realize it exists. This increases the chance of a safe escape and could help with minimizing fire damage to the property. Below are some smoke alarm facts issued by the National Fire Protection Association:

  • In 2014-2018, smoke alarms sounded in more than half (54%) of the home fires reported to U.S. fire departments.
  • Almost three of every five home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms (41%) or no working smoke alarms (16%).
  • The death rate per 1,000 reported home fires was more than twice as high in homes that did not have any working smoke alarms compared to the rate in homes with working smoke alarms (13.0 deaths vs. 5.8 deaths per 1,000 fires).
  • In fires in which the smoke alarms were present but did not operate, two of every five (41%) of the smoke alarms had missing or disconnected batteries.
  • Dead batteries caused one-quarter (26%) of the smoke alarm failures.

Fire Preparedness for Your Pet

4/18/2022 (Permalink)

Window sticker to notify fire department of pets in home A sticker like this can be posted on the door and windows of the home to notify firefighters of pets in the home.

The vast majority of fires occur unexpectedly leaving you and your loved ones endangered without warning. While most families have a fire emergency plan in place one aspect that can be overlooked is the well-being of their pets. One easy way to include your pet in fire emergency preparedness is by creating a disaster kit for them. Below are some items to pack in their kit in case of a fire:

  • Water
  • Extra Pet Food
  • Important documents (i.e. proof of ownership, vaccination history, vet info)
  • Animal specific first-aid supplies
  • An extra set of basic pet supplies such as a collar, harness, and leash

Pet safety preparation can help reduce any potential negative effects a fire emergency can have on you and your pets.

Tips to Keep Your Family Safe From a Fire in Your Sebastian, FL Property

3/21/2022 (Permalink)

A fire escape plan worksheet Keep things simple by using a fire escape plan worksheet like this one.

Preparation is the biggest component to optimizing your family’s safety during a fire emergency. Here are some simple ways the Red Cross recommends you can diligently prepare for a fire emergency:

Install Smoke Alarms- Smoke alarms should be installed inside every room on every level of your home. Always test your smoke alarms monthly and change the batteries if they are not working.

Create a Fire Escape Plan- Ideally, there should be two routes out of every room in your home. Decide on one meeting point for once everyone is out. It should take less than two minutes for each person to get to safety. Practice this escape plan at least twice a year.

“Get out, stay out, and call for help.”- Never go back inside for anyone or anything.

Once everyone is safe and the fire has been extinguished. Call SERVPRO of Vero Beach. Our team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We are here to help!

Surprise Causes of Cigarette Fires

1/30/2022 (Permalink)

technician wiping soot of ceiling from fire damage` Our technicians are expertly trained to remediate any damage cause by fire to your property.

Although everyone knows a cigarette fire can cause considerable damage to a home, exactly how this type of fire happens may be less obvious. Cigarette fires start for many reasons. Here are four lesser-known — but no less dangerous — causes.

1. Ashtray Fires
When smokers extinguish their cigarettes in ashtrays, they expect those cigarettes to go out. This isn't always the case. A pile of spent ashes from another smoker can start a fire if those earlier ashes haven't been put out completely. A smoker in a hurry may think he or she has fully extinguished a cigarette when, in reality, that butt is still burning. Ashtrays in public spaces can also be filled with trash and other materials that are essentially tinder for an ashtray fire.

2. Careless Outside Smoking
People smoke outside their homes for many reasons, including the belief that smoking outdoors will eliminate any chance of a fire occurring inside the home. This is false. Although smoking outside is listed on many fire prevention checklists, smoking in the driveway or other outdoor areas can still cause a cigarette fire. Leaving a lit cigarette on a porch or a deck can cause a fire, for example. Tossing a cigarette into the grass can also create the need for fire cleanup.

3. Trashcan Ash
When placed into the trash with other garbage, the tiniest of embers can start a fire. Cigarette ashes must be completely extinguished before disposal to prevent the chance of a fire.

4. E-Cigarettes
Many assume that e-cigarettes cannot cause a fire because they are flameless. This is false. Although rare, the battery in an e-cig can overheat, causing a potentially fiery explosion.

Minimizing the Risk of Fire Damage From Space Heaters

1/24/2022 (Permalink)

Owner of SERVPRO of Vero Beach bundled in winter jacket sitting at her desk. We hope you and your family stay safe and warm during this next cold front!

Space heaters are common causes for fires and need for smoke cleanup, reducing fire risks doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, with a few simple steps, you should be able to avoid a burned space heater in most circumstances:

Turn it Off

A space heater can be your best friend on a cold day if your furnace isn’t working well or if you don’t have one. You may be thinking leaving it on all day will help warm up your home faster and more effectively. However, this will only increase the likelihood of it having problems or starting fires. When you leave your home, or if you don’t plan on being in a certain part of your house for a while, turn it off.

Clean the Filter

Don’t put off this important step. Keep extra filters handy and replace them as they become dirty. When in doubt, consult your owner’s manual. It’s better to change it out unnecessarily than to leave it in too long.

Situate it properly

Don’t put your space heater in a cramped space or near blankets. Also, don’t plug in multiple space heaters in a single outlet.

If your space heater does cause a fire, get in touch with a professional smoke cleanup crew right away. However, if you follow these guidelines, you shouldn’t have to worry about fire or smoke concerns from a burned space heater.

Tips for Prepping Financially for an Emergency Disaster

1/6/2022 (Permalink)

Man sitting at desk drafting estimates to send to insurance for homeowner claims Jimi can be seen here working diligently on estimates to send to insurance adjusters for our clients.

The focus of this blog is on getting financially prepared for an emergency disaster. Ready.Gov highlights some ways that homeowners can get prepared at either no cost or a low cost. In addition to the resources listed on Ready.Gov, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) offers a plethora of resources that can be shipped directly to your home.

SERVPRO of Vero Beach is able to work directly with your insurance company to ease the stress during emergency disasters. It’s important that homeowners make sure they are adequately covered for emergencies. For example, if your home is in a flood zone, flood insurance should be a priority. The Red Cross has an interactive map that shows common disasters across the United States by region and what you should be prepared for.

To get started, here are a few tips you should consider in order to get financially prepared for an emergency disaster:

  • Gather financial, medical, personal, and household information and keep them in an accessible safe space.
  • Keep small amounts of cash in your home for items such as food, gas, or other supplies in the event that you cannot get to an ATM. In addition, consider opening a savings account and saving up money for potential disasters.
  • Keep on top of your homeowners or renters, health, and life insurance. Consider purchasing flood insurance from the national flood insurance program as well as reviewing your policy to make sure you’re adequately covered.

Fireplace Hazards and Safe Practices for Your Vero Beach, FL Home

12/22/2021 (Permalink)

Stock image of fire place with SERVPRO logo SERVPRO of Vero Beach is Indian River's leading restoration company for fire, water, and mold remediation.

Nearly half of all home-heating fires and hospital visits can be attributed to improper or unsafe use of fireplaces. That is why we, at SERVPRO of Vero Beach, want to keep you informed about safe fireplace practices. As temperatures begin to decrease and the holiday season approaches, we encourage families to gather around the flames as desired and apply safe habits that minimize the threat of an uncontrolled fire.

  1. Burn safe materials – It is important that you only burn natural materials in your fireplace. This includes tinder (e.g. pine needles or tiny sticks), kindling (e.g. small sticks or pinecones), and fuel (e.g. large logs). Never introduce foreign substances such as cardboard, newspaper, and paper trash as they burn poorly, produce a lot of smoke, and release chemicals into the air.
  2. Avoid using flammable liquids to start fires – The volatile nature of gas means that you should never put it in your fireplace as it could easily cause an uncontrolled fire. It is best to simply use matches and tinder, however, if you require an accelerant to start your fire, use a small amount of lighter fluid.
  3. Clean out the ashes after every fire – Regularly clearing your fireplace of ashes will prevent live coals from burning while you are away while simultaneously keeping your fireplace clean and visually attractive.
  4. Keep a fireplace screen in front of the fireplace when in use – A fireplace screen (3 ft. high or taller) will catch live sparks that leap out of the fire and prevent large logs from falling out. This ensures that the fire does not spread beyond its non-flammable containment and that nearby persons are not injured.

If your home is affected by a fire, due to a fireplace mishap or otherwise, call SERVPRO of Vero Beach at 772-770-0501 for fire cleanup and reconstruction services.

The 5 Main Classes of Fire

12/22/2021 (Permalink)

Powder residue from fire extinguisher on kitchen floor Fire mitigation doesn't just involve water and smoke damage mitigation. It also includes cleaning up the chemicals left behind from extinguishing.

It’s important to understand the five classes of fires and how to properly extinguish them without causing further damage. Each type of fire involves different flammable materials and requires a special approach. Below is a summary of the five main classes you will encounter:

Class A

Involving solid combustible materials such as wood, paper, cloth, trash, or plastic, Class A fires are the most common types of fire. In addition to being the most common fire, Class A fires are also the easiest to extinguish. To do so, it is recommended to use a water or foam fire extinguisher, or water to douse the fire.

Class B

Class B fires involve flammable liquids like oil, alcohol, or gasoline. More specifically, liquids or gasses like petroleum grease, alcohol, paint, propane, or gasoline; not cooking oils or grease. When faced with a Class B fire, it is very important not to use a water extinguisher as the stream of water might spread the material rather than extinguish it. Instead, use a foam, powder, or carbon dioxide extinguisher to cut off a fire’s oxygen supply.

Class C

Class C fires require a source of electricity. Therefore, they may be started by old wiring, worn-out breaker boxes, frayed electrical cords, or faulty appliances. Common in both households and industrial settings, it is important to, first, disconnect the appliance or item from its power source as long as it is safe to do so. Then, if possible, extinguish the flames using a carbon dioxide or dry powder fire extinguisher. Do not use water or foam to put out an electrical fire, as both materials can conduct electricity and potentially make the situation more dangerous.

Class D

Most rare among each class of fire, Class D fires can happen when metal ignites. This typically requires high levels of heat and is most common when alkali metals such as potassium, magnesium, aluminum, and sodium are exposed to air or water. Although you are unlikely to encounter a Class D blaze in your home, it is advised that such fires be extinguished with a dry powder extinguisher only.

Class K

Termed as Class K fires, this classification is comprised of fires involving cooking oils such as vegetable oil or animal fats. The high flashpoints of cooking oils and fats make Class K fires most likely to start when a pan is left unattended on a stove. If possible, it is important to turn off the heat on any cooking appliances and remove them from the heat source. Then, similarly to how Class B fires are treated, avoid using water to extinguish the fire. Instead, opt for a wet chemical extinguisher.

Preventing Fires in Your Vero Beach, FL Property

11/22/2021 (Permalink)

Kitchen after a fire We are available 24/7 for all your fire remediation needs!

Below are some simple yet effective home fire prevention tips that we can all follow to prevent common household fires.

Cooking Fires: Cooking fires make up at least 23 % of home fires and 9 % of fatalities. They can start with something so simple like a hand towel that is placed too close to a stove to an entirely dangerous house fire in just a matter of seconds. To prevent cooking fires, avoid ever leaving anything combustible near the stove burner. Keep them at least 3 feet away from the cooktop and this includes wall decorations and curtains.

Heating Equipment: Space heaters and wood stove tops are the most common heating equipment that causes house fires. They account for 15 % of house fires and 13 % of fatalities. Most heating equipment fires take place when space heaters or wood stove tops are placed near combustibles with nobody around attending to the area. Such fires can be prevented by placing space heaters or wood stove tops at least 3 feet away from bedding, drapes, and other flammable items. You also need to plug them directly into power sockets instead of using extension cords and switch them off completely when you head to bed or leave the house.

Electrical Equipment: Overloaded extension cords or bad electrical connections are dangerous as they can melt the wiring system which starts house fires. This type of fire accounts for 9 % of home fires and 10 % of fatalities. To prevent this type of fire, replace your extension cords which seem to be fraying. Those extension cords that are undersized to support the number of electronics you have also need to be changed to larger-gauge cords. Extension cords are also not supposed to be run below rugs as accidents are just waiting to happen. Other causes of accidents may involve miscellaneous incidents that are caused by negligent homeowners.

Fire Damage Restoration: Prevention is not that difficult to accomplish if we follow the correct recommended steps. However, occasionally things just happen unexpectedly which are simply beyond our control. If you have suffered from an unfortunate home fire, do not worry about fixing everything on your own. Always engage the services of professional fire damage restoration experts who can assess the extent of your home damage and recommend the proper techniques that need to be taken. It can be hard to come back from a home fire both physically and mentally which is why it is crucial to make use of professional restoration services. Focus on recuperating mentally while the experts take charge of getting your home back to its original physical condition with careful expertise and equipment.

What Factors Determine the Severity of Smoke Damage During a Fire?

9/24/2021 (Permalink)

Smoke damage in home after fire. Here you can see the concentration of smoke damage towards the top of the wall and ceiling.

There are two main factors that determine the severity of smoke damage during a fire:

The temperature of the smoke: Fire produces heat, and as a result, the air above the fire

becomes hot, expands and becomes lighter. The lighter air moves up, and its place is taken by the denser cold air. The process generates air currents called convection currents, which cause smoke to rise to the top. As the temperature of the air increases, the pressure it exerts against the surfaces increases as well. Meaning, hotter fires produce a hotter smoke that is forced against the surfaces. The smoke particles in such fires can go deeper into the surface pores and cause extensive damage.

The temperature of the surrounding surfaces: Hotter smoke move towards cooler surfaces such as outside walls, closets, and unheated rooms- damaging these areas the heaviest. It can be surprising to see how much smoke residue finds its way into drawers and closets.

A fire incident can be quite a traumatizing experience, but SERVPRO of Vero Beach’s technicians can use multiple techniques to clean surfaces that are heavily damaged by smoke and soot.

Is Your Dryer Safe and Working Properly?

9/15/2021 (Permalink)

Dryer duct with lint build up Lint is highly flammable, regular duct cleanings are essential for fire prevention.

Here Are Three Signs That Tell You It May Not Be:

The Vent Trap Doesn't Open Properly

A stuck vent trap is also another sign of lint build-up.  It could be the result of overdue maintenance and will eventually affect your appliance.  You should frequently check for debris or lint around the dryer hose to catch this problem before it causes a nasty clog or lint fire.

Clothes Take Longer to Dry

When your dryer vent is clogged, clothes take to dryer as hot humid air cannot leave the dryer. This translates into more dry time and wear and tear on your dryer.  This may also add unnecessary humidity into your structure which could cause secondary damages.

A Burning Smell

If you detect a burning smell from your dryer, please turn it off immediately.  This could be caused by your drum or lint trap being clogged.  The smell could be coming from hot clothes and longer drying times.  Check your dryer's vents and traps immediately, or call in a professional appliance company.

Replacing a dryer can be costly, don't wait until a malfunction to start your troubleshooting. Regular maintenance will save you money and prevent a possible lint fire in the future.

Grill Maintenance For Fire Prevention

9/2/2021 (Permalink)

Man grilling ribs Our Crew Chief, Greg, is our in house grill master!

Proper grill cleaning may reduce the risk of fire damage to your property. There are several steps you can take to ensure your unit is always clean and ready to use.

1. Begin While the Grill Is Warm

Removing thick grease and baked-on residue can be difficult when the grill is cold, so cleaning the unit while it is still somewhat warm may make the job easier. Wait until you can touch the racks comfortably and then prepare for grill cleaning by gathering a pair of rubber gloves and a grill brush before filling a bucket with hot, soapy water large enough to immerse the grates.

2. Disconnect and Dismantle the Grill

Before you perform any grill maintenance, check to ensure all the dials are in the off position, then turn off and disconnect the propane tank. Remove the grates and the drip pan and place them in the bucket of soapy water to soak. Next, clean the underside of the grill’s hood to remove residue that can build up there and cause a grease fire. You can guard the heating elements from dripping water and grease by covering them with heavy-duty foil.

3. Rinse and Reassemble

Once you scrub out the inside of the grill, pull the drip pan and grates from the soak bucket, scrub and rinse them with a hose and place them back inside the unit. Remove the foil and wipe down the outer surface to finish the job.

How to Extinguish an Electrical Fire in Your Vero Beach, FL Property

8/24/2021 (Permalink)

kitchen with fire damage from electrical short in the microwave. A short in the microwave wiring was the cause of this kitchen fire.

One-third of all home structure fires stem from an electrical source, and because they tend to be difficult to identify, they are usually much more dangerous and destructive than other types of fires. We want to share what you should do if an electrical fire starts in your home:

  • Cut off the electricity. If the device that is causing the electrical fire is found, and you can reach the cord and outlet safely, unplug it.
  • Add sodium bicarbonate. If the fire is small, you may put it out by smothering it with baking soda.
  • Remove the oxygen source. It may also be put out by removing the oxygen source with clothing or a heavy blanket if the fire is small and it is safe to do so.
  • Don’t use water to put it out.Water is a natural conductor of electricity and if you throw water on an electrical fire, you can get shocked or electrocuted. Also, water may enable to fire to spread by conducting electricity throughout the room and potentially igniting flammable materials.
  • Check your fire extinguisher.Electrical fires are a Class C fire, which means that you will need an extinguisher that is appropriate for this type of fire. Most residential fire extinguishers are multi-purpose and labeled ABC, but it is crucial to verify this before using it on an electrical fire.

Please keep these tips handy for combatting an electrical fire in the event of an emergency. Knowing how to respond quickly could be the difference between a small fire and a devastating disaster. For fire restoration, call SERVPRO of Vero Beach at, 772-770-0501

What is a Soot Tag?

7/8/2021 (Permalink)

Soot tags hanging from trusses in attic. Here you can see the web like soot tags found in an attic after a fire.

As fire restoration specialists, SERVPRO of Vero Beach has restored many fire damaged properties over the years. The extent of the damage can sometimes be very obvious and other times it is not-especially in instances when the damage is in the attics or trapped between walls where it is unseen until we dig in with our inspection.

One of the most common visible markers of fire damage are the black soot tags that seem to spring out of nowhere after a fire. Clients often assume soot tags are spider webs that have soot settled on them. However, these black “spider webs” are not actually related to spiders at all. Soot tags form when petroleum/synthetic based sources burn in areas of low circulation. During a fire, the heat produced moves into cooler areas since the air is seeking to create equilibrium. This causes the soot particles to follow the heat into the cooler areas with low circulation. Since soot is a product of combustion, the particles themselves are charged which makes it quite easy for them to create long chains of soot.

Things You Should Throw Away After a Fire

6/24/2021 (Permalink)

Bedroom with fire damage on structure and contents. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

fter a fire, our goal, at SERVPRO of Vero Beach, is to restore as much of your belongings as possible. While many things can be salvaged, there are some that absolutely should be disposed of after a fire. It is important to carefully consider what should be kept and what should be discarded. When certain materials are exposed to high temperatures, they release chemicals, including:

  • Plastics
  • Nonorganic fibers
  • Wiring

A good rule of thumb is: anything that you plan on putting onto or into your body should be disposed of. Items such as medicine, makeup and toiletries should always be replaced. This also means you should get rid of most foods, items in plastic containers, and anything containing harmful chemicals.  When dealing with fire damage, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Hiring a professional fire remediation company like SERVPRO of Vero Beach is always recommended when navigating these kinds of decisions.

Campfire Safety Tips

6/7/2021 (Permalink)

Every year thousands of structures fall victim to forest fires. According to the National Park Service, “Nearly 85% of wildland fires are cause by humans”, with an overwhelming majority resulting specifically from campfires. That is why we would like to remind you of some simple precautions to follow when camping this year as outlined by www.recreation.gov.

  • Pick Your Spot Wisely:Use existing fire circles or pits if available. Do not build a fire in dry or windy conditions, especially if there are fire restrictions in place (check with local authorities). Build fires at least 15 feet away from tent walls, shrubs, or other flammable materials.
  • Prepare Your Pit:Choose a spot for your campfire that is downwind from your tent and gear, and protected from wind gusts. Clear a 10-foot-wide diameter area around your site, and make sure there are no limbs or branches hanging over your pit. Always circle the pit with rocks, or use an existing fire ring.
  • Build A Small Campfire:Once you have a prepared pit, you are ready to build a small campfire that stays well within the fire pit. It is recommended to use three types of wood. Tinder, which is made of small twigs, dry leaves or grass, will get the fire started initially. Kindling, consisting of twigs smaller than one inch around, will help to light the larger pieces of wood. Fuel—the large pieces of wood—will provide the heat and sustained flames once the tinder and kindling are consumed.
  • This is the most important step! EXTINGUISH THE FIRE PROPERLY:Campers need to properly maintain and extinguish campfires when going to bed or leaving the area. If possible, let the campfire burn down to ashes. Pour water on the fire to drown all embers, not just the red ones. Once this is done, stir everything in the pit with a shovel and test for heat with the back of your hand.  Once it is dead, you are safe to go to bed or leave the area.

Types of Smoke and the Soot They Create

5/18/2021 (Permalink)

wall and ceiling covered in soot from a fire. Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Vero Beach Home.

Smoke and soot are very invasive and can settle into even the smallest crevices of your home, leading to hidden damage and lingering odors. SERVPRO of Vero Beach’s extensive experience with smoke and soot damage allows us to accurately assess the extent of the damage in order to develop a comprehensive plan of action. Certain factors during a fire cause it to yield different types of smoke/residue. Each type of smoke creates different types of soot residue. Before restoration begins, our technicians will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Some examples of wet and dry smoke include:

  • Wet Smoke- Created by low-heat, smoldering fires. Both plastic and rubber produce this waste when they are burned. They tend to have fewer flames but much more thick, black smoke than their dry counterparts. Smears when being wiped because wet smoke residue is sticky and dense.
  • Dry Smoke – Created by fast-burning, high-temperature fires that are typically fueled by paper or wood. Its powdery texture means it doesn’t smear when being wipe.
  • Fuel/Oil Smoke- Leaves behind petroleum residue which is sticky, dense, and especially difficult to clean. Its odor is strong and offensive, easily ruining upholstered pieces of furniture when not cleaned promptly.
  • Protein Smoke- Created when organic material evaporates during a low-heat fire. Smoke damage is essentially invisible with no noticeable soot or streaking, but it can permanently discolor painted, varnished, or other finished surfaces.

Since every smoke and fire damage loss is unique, each job requires a unique restoration plan. SERVPRO of Vero Beach has the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage “Like it never even happened.” If you have any questions about fire, smoke, or soot damage, call us today at (772)770-0501. Potential Causes of Electrical Fires in Your Vero Beach, FL Home.

Man wiping soot from fire off of the ceiling. Here you can see how soot settled onto the ceiling after an electrical fire.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, electrical fires account for roughly 7% of all residential fires in the country. Research shows that faulty wiring is the leading cause of electrical fires in most homes. When it comes to electrical fires, you cannot afford to be lackadaisical. If your home is more than two decades old, the likelihood of having faulty wiring is high. Rodents, such as rats or squirrels, can find their way into spaces with electrical wires and chew on electrical cords, creating a risk for fire. On the other hand, overloading an older electrical system with modern electrical devices can prove to be too overwhelming, leading to damages on your wiring, appliances, and even breaker box. Holiday seasons are also associated with electrical house fires resulting from overloaded or frayed extension cords. Regardless of the cause, SERVPRO of Vero Beach the experience to help make it “Like it never even happened.” In the event your home falls victim to an  electrical fire, call 911, ensure that everyone is safe, and then contact SERVPRO of Vero Beach. Some Things to Know About Soot

2/22/2021 (Permalink)

Three dry sponges stacked like a pyramid. Dry Sponges are specially designed for the purpose of safely cleaning soot off surfaces.

WHAT IS SOOT? Soot is the black residue that is left after a fire. It is the product of incomplete fossil fuel combustion. When coal, oil, wood or other fuels are burned, the residual material, comprised mostly of carbon, can travel through the air and settle into the surrounding environment.

IS SOOT HARMFUL? Unfortunately, yes. During a house fire, both natural and synthetic materials burn. This means the soot particles can contain acids, chemicals, metals, dust and other hazardous materials sticking to surfaces. If it is left untreated, tiny particles of soot can be inhaled deep into your lungs causing breathing issues including severe respiratory illnesses that can inhibit your ability to carry out normal activities.

SOOT CLEAN-UP

Soot contamination is very challenging to clean up. Improper attempts at cleaning can cause the soot to spread and absorb into your belongings. The best way to ensure your safety and avoid further damage is by hiring a professional remediation company. SERVPRO of Vero Beach is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. What is O-Zone Deodorization?

2/17/2021 (Permalink)

Two women in front of taxi cab posing with deodorizing equipment. The ozone machine (left) and HEPA vacuum (right) are two pieces of equipment that are essential to the fire restoration process.

Ozone is an inorganic molecule with chemical formula O3.It occurs naturally in the earth’s atmosphere and can be created by Ozone Generators. Ozone generators produce ozone by breaking apart oxygen (O2) molecules into single atoms, which then attach to other oxygen molecules in the air to form ozone (O3). They accomplish this in one of two ways

Silent corona discharge:These machines use electric discharge to produce ozone by splitting the normal oxygen molecules in the air into single atoms. These atoms then attach to other O2molecules in the air to form ozone (O3).

Ultraviolet radiation:This process of ozone generation is similar to how the sun’s ultraviolet radiation splits O2to form individual oxygen atoms. According to InterNACHI, this process is considered to be less efficient than corona discharge.

Ozone is very effective in eliminating odors including tobacco smoke, human and pet odors, food odors, mold and mildew odors, garbage odors, renovation odors and much more. It is especially effective at removing the smell of smoke after a fire loss. It is important to keep in mind, it is not a re-odorant. Meaning, it does not mask an unpleasant odor with a “more pleasant” fragrance. It totally destroys the offending gases that are the source of everything we smell. If you have been combating foul or unusual odors with no success consider giving our office a call at, 772-770-0501 to see if O-zoning is a good solution for you!

Thanksgiving Safety Tips

11/16/2020 (Permalink)

Woman using fire extinguisher to put out an oven fire. Cooking caused almost half of all reported home fires and home fire injuries, and it is the second leading cause of home fire deaths in 2014-2018.

It is said “the kitchen is the heart of the home”, this is especially true during the holidays. This is why it’s important to keep kitchen fire safety in the forefront of the mind. Things can quickly become hectic, especially when your house is full of family and friends. According to the National Fire Protection Association, Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires but following these simple safety tips can keep you and your loved ones safe.

  • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stove top so you can keep an eye on the food.
  • Stay in the home when cooking your turkey, and check on it frequently.
  • Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and kids should stay three feet away.
  • Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns.
  • Keep knives out of the reach of children.
  • Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child.
  • Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet.
  • Never leave children alone in room with a lit candle.
  • Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks or bags.
  • Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button.

Happy National Fire Safety Month!

10/21/2020 (Permalink)

October is National fire safety month. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has announced this year’s campaign is “Serve Up Safety in the Kitchen!”. As the title implies, this year’s focus is kitchen fire prevention. Did you know cooking is the #1 cause of home fires and home fire injuries? The NFPA recommends the following steps if you have a cooking fire:

  • Get out! Close the door behind you when you ou to help contain the fire.
  • After you leave, call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number.
  • If you try to put out the fire, be sure others are getting out and you have a clear way out.
  • Keep a lid nearby when you’re cooking to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.
  • For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.

We hope these tips will help keep you as safe as possible if you experience a kitchen fire. If your home requires clean up or restoration after a fire, give our office a call at 772-770-0501. We are here to help!

Smoke Detector Maintenance for your Indian River County Home

10/6/2020 (Permalink)

White man pressing test button on smoke alarm. A quick way to make sure you always replace your batteries in time is to change them during daylight savings while you adjust your clocks.

The U.S. Fire Administration recommends monthly testing of your home's smoke detector. It is recommended that you follow the manufacturers instructions. However, a general testing typically resembles the steps below:

Step 1- Alert all members of the household that you will be testing the smoke alarms.

Step 2- Pick one household member to stand at the furthest point in your home from the detector you are testing. This will ensure that the alarm can be heard throughout the home. If the alarm sounds faint, you may want to add extra detectors.

Step 3- Press and hold the “Test” button on the smoke detector. It may take a few seconds to begin, but you should hear a loud, ear piercing beep. If the sound is faint or nonexistent try replacing the batteries. Smoke detector batteries should be changed every six months.

Step 4- Check smoke detector to make sure there is no dust or other particles blocking the grates.

According to the USFA Smoke detectors have an average life span of 10 years. Always replace your smoke detector every 10 years. Hopefully, taking these steps will help prevent smoke and fire damage in your home. However, if you experience a smoke or fire loss please give our office a call. We are here to help!!

Summer Fire Prevention Tips

7/14/2020 (Permalink)

Fireworks bursting in the night sky with a man holding up a sparkler. Fireworks have been traditionally used to celebrate our independence since 1777.

Summer is known for picnics and good times outdoors. It’s the best time of year to enjoy camping, bonfires, fireworks and cookouts with family and friends. However, summer is also the time of year fire incidences increase. Below are some easy steps you can take to help protect your home and avoid fire damage.

Grilling Safety: Keep the grill away from the side of your home. Clean the grates and check fuel connections frequently. If you use a charcoal grill, never dispose of used charcoal until they have cooled completely.

Fireworks Safety: Always light fireworks in a safe location outside away from your home, garage, shed, grass or family.

Bonfire Safety: Make sure the area where you start your bonfire is a legal location. Never build a bonfire on a high-wind night. The pile shouldn't be bigger than 5'x5' to keep the flames containable and make sure to keep water nearby. After the bonfire is done, turn over the charred materials with metal shovels and rakes and douse the area with water.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to a professional fire restoration service if you’re ever in need. We are here to help!

Why to Call a Fire Restoration Specialist vs. a Building Contractor

7/5/2020 (Permalink)

Two men cleaning soot from a fire off the ceiling. Did you know? During the lifetime of average household, chances are 2 to 1 that there will be an accidental fire.

Before you can begin to rebuild what was damaged by a fire, there are many steps to be taken. Fire, smoke, and water can affect each part of the home differently-therefore each area may require different methods of sanitizing, restoring and rebuilding. Typically, a building contractor is not trained to properly remediate damage from a fire. However, a fire restoration company has the training, knowledge and specialized equipment to handle each unique situation. Some of the specialized equipment a fire restoration company has on hand are:

  • Soot and moisture measuring equipment
  • Thermal imaging equipment
  • Air Scrubbers or Ozone Machines
  • Specialized cleaning products and equipment

In addition, most fire restoration projects are covered by insurance. Fire restoration companies are experts at knowing what can or cannot be salvaged and how much it will cost to salvage and clean building contents. They have years of experience in working with insurance companies and adjusters, and can expedite the process by weeks and even months. The staff at SERVPRO of Vero Beach has the knowledge and experience to restore your home or business after any type of disaster. Let us help you make it “Like it never even happened.”!

Fire Extinguisher Clean-Up

2/24/2020 (Permalink)

Five fire extinguishers of various sizes lined up in front of a brick wall Fire extinguishers can be made of different dousing agents. It's important to know which one you have so you can safely clean the residue left behind.

Fire extinguishers can be a quick and effective tool for most cases of minor fire break outs. It’s important to know how to clean up any residue left after the fire has been completely extinguished. The first step is to check the label on your extinguisher to identify which chemical was used as the dousing agent. After identifying the dousing agent, we recommend the following steps:

  • Dry Chemical
    • Potassium bicarbonate or sodium bicarbonate – Safe to remove with a vacuum. It is recommended to wear a mask, goggles, and gloves to prevent inhalation or an allergic reaction.
    • Mono Ammonium Phosphate – Wipe residue with a cloth using a 1:1 solution of baking soda and warm water. Finish by drying and sanitizing, as needed.
  • Wet Chemical
    • Clean with hot, soapy water rinsing frequently. Finish by drying and sanitizing as needed. It is recommended to wear a mask, goggles, and gloves to prevent an allergic reaction to the chemicals.
  • Air Pressure
    • Water or CO2- Typically does not leave behind a residue. If moisture is left behind dry the area thoroughly.

Prevention of Car Battery Explosions

2/18/2020 (Permalink)

White wall covered in black soot from a car battery explosion. The soot on the wall was caused by a car battery explosion.

Today we are going to take a dive into a unique situation. This is a fire job we encountered caused by a car battery that exploded. That’s right, a car battery! This is actually more common than you may think, but there are ways to easily prevent it. Let’s start by gaining an understanding of the mechanics of a car battery.

Most car batteries are 12-volt lead-acid batteries, which have been built in pretty much the same fashion same since the 1930’s. Within the outer polymer case there are six two-volt chambers, also called cells. Each cell contains a grid of lead plates submerged in electrolyte (sulfuric acid). There are vents located at the top of the battery to vent gasses formed during charging cycles. Hydrogen gas is generated during the charging cycle and accumulates in a space above the sulfuric acid, prior to venting.

Hydrogen gas is easily ignited by a flame or spark and has a wide range of explosive limits in air. This leads us into the first of the three most common causes for car battery explosions, an internal spark. As a battery ages it begins to lose electrolyte. This leaves the top of the lead plates exposed to air inside the battery case. This can lead to the plates warping over time. When you put a demand of the battery for power, let’s say by starting and engine, the heavy demand can cause the warped plates to flex and touch which thus creating a spark. Replacement of electrolyte through proper battery maintenance is the recommended way to prevent this.

The second cause of explosion is caused by improper jump-starting. This happens when you attach the jumper cables to another car’s good battery first then attach it to the dead battery. This practice causes sparking. It is best to connect the jumper cables to the dead battery first, then connect it to the good battery. It is also important to note that you should never touch the jumper cables together as this may also create a spark.

Finally, a lack of proper mechanical safety practices may cause a battery to explode. For example, you may be tempted to set a wrench or other metal tool down on the battery because of its convenient flat surface. If the wrench were to make contact with both the positive and negative terminals this would cause hundreds of amps to run through it. This is sufficient enough to weld the wrench to the terminals of the battery, rapidly making the wrench red hot and untouchable. The heat generated can transfer to the battery creating overpressure which can lead an explosion. To avoid this be cautious not to let anything come in contact with the battery that was not designed to do so.

Thankfully there are lots of easy ways to avoid a car battery explosion! Please know if, in the rare occasion, your car battery explodes you call us at (772) 770-0501 and we will make it “Like it never even happened.”

Fire Fighters holding a hose spraying water Extinguishing Fires

Living in Vero Beach, thankfully, we don’t have to worry about rapid wildfires like the people on the West coast. But nevertheless, being in the fire restoration business, we often still work with customers whose houses and buildings catch fire, and sometimes burn down. In some serious cases, there’s often a flaw involved. Many times the sprinkler system is broken, the smoke alarm doesn’t go off or no one is even home to be aware of the fire. There are many other issues that can contribute to building fires, but the Building Fire Protection Division are working on aspects to improve on, to decrease the issues.

The Fire and Life Safety Building Systems industry have been way behind other industries when it comes to smart technology monitoring and inspections. And because of that, they have been researching many ways to advance and improve on, while eliminating outdated and inefficient equipment. They say that there are many benefits and minimum risks when it comes to smart technology monitoring and since we live in a digital age, there are better practices available. The purpose of the smart technology is to prevent or lessen the effects of a fire. These built in systems will alert the homeowner and fire stations at a quicker rate, and the technology will be able to monitor equipment at a more precise measurement. The quicker our technology advances, the safer we become!

Fire Trouble

10/7/2019 (Permalink)

At a fire job we we recently attended to, the owners were blessed that their entire home wasn't burned down, but that it only effected a portion of the exterior of the home and one bedroom. The room has a horrible smell to it and in this picture that you see that some of the ceiling has been ripped out.

The owner reports to have called a different business that started the remediation job, but never came back to finish it. The had began to rip out the drywall and ceiling, but not in a clean manner.

We quickly inspected the issues and mistakes and began the remediation. We had to seal up the effected bedroom in order to put an ozone machine in and clear up the air and material.

Call SERVPRO of Vero Beach! We will make it look "Like it never even happened." (772)770-0501

Brand New Generator | Probable Cause of Loss

10/2/2019 (Permalink)

wall of house completely black and burned by fire House Fire

Most people can't imagine arriving to their home to see that a fire started and caused destruction to their property. But once a fire hits our home, or a neighbor or close friend or relative, we realize that a lot of instances are really beyond our control.

For example, the most recent fire job that we attended to in Sebastian had a cause of loss that was most likely a generator. In fact, it was a brand new generator that was bought for the hurricane that recently passed by.

It caught on fire, therefore catching fire to surrounding areas, including the patio, overhang, and exterior wall that was attached to the bedroom.

The people were devastated but called SERVPRO of Vero Beach right away at (772)770-0501. We will keep you tuned in for when the job is complete!

Do You Light Candles Often?

9/12/2019 (Permalink)

Candles are very calming and there are so many reasons people use them. They look pretty twinkling in the dim room, enhancing the ambiance, while giving off a fragrant smell that can be extremely alluring. However, there is a con and it's that they can also be the cause of a house fire.

The National Fire Protection Association states, 3 out of every 5 fires that were started by a candle were caused because they were placed near a flammable item, such as furniture, bedding, or decorations.

Here are some tips to prevent candle- originated house fires:

  • Blow out candles before leaving a room or going to bed
  • Keep candles one foot away from flammable items
  • Use a sturdy candle holder
  • Light candles carefully, keeping your hair and any loose clothing away from the flame
  • You should not light a candle if oxygen is used in the home

Although candles can add to the decor in a room, they can also add danger. Just remember candles are an open flame which means they can easily ignite. Create an environment that is safe for you!  SERVPRO of Vero Beach is here for you- call (772) 770-0501

Restaurant Fires in Vero Beach

9/11/2019 (Permalink)

Exterior of restaurant, Citrus. Outdoor steps leading up to patio, and royal palm trees out front Vero Beach Restaurant

Within the past year and a half we have witnessed two fires in local restaurants.

The most recent was caused by an oven that was accidentally left on in the kitchen by the employees. There had been remnants of grease that was left on the stove top from daily cooking and the oven got hot enough through the night to start a grease fire. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the fire and there was no structural damage to the building.

The other restaurant, unfortunately underwent serious damage and demolition and was closed for a year. The kitchen fire was caused by a pot left on a burner. Believe it or not but the fire is not what caused all the damage, it was the water and smoke. They had to tear out all the wiring, plumbing, ceiling, walls and flooring and completely reconstruct the building.

Always make sure your commercial kitchens are shut down and turned off properly every night by your employees.

If you ever have a problem, whether it's a fire, smoke, soot or water give us a call anytime at  772-770-0501. SERVPRO of Vero Beach loves all the local restaurants and shops. We are glad that both locations are now up and running again!

Fire Prevention | 5 Tips

7/17/2019 (Permalink)

Losing all your possessions from a house fire is something that many people don't think about; but it is a common and very possible occurrence. We want you to be proactive and fully confident in protecting your home and loved ones from falling victim to a house fire. Below, we have listed some helpful tips & simple things to do:

  1. Test Your Smoke Alarms

Test the batteries in your smoke alarm once a month in order to maintain them properly. If you find they don’t work, replace them immediately.

  1. Keep the Stove and Oven Clear

Ensure that your cooking area is clear at all times. Towels, oven mitts and cookbooks can easily catch fire, so keep them at a safe distance from the stovetop. Also, don’t leave anything flammable nearby and make sure curtains from windows do not hang over the stovetop.

  1. Check Your Dryer

Always be sure to clean out the lint trap after every cycle, and regularly check behind and around dryer for lint or other items of laundry. If you own a gas- powered dryer, have it inspected annually.

  1. Fire Extinguishers

Have fire extinguishers ready and handy in each key area of your home. Make sure all family members know where they are located and how to properly use one.

  1. Flammable Products

Many household cleaning products and cosmetic items are flammable; like glass cleaner, nail polish, and hairspray. Keep all flammable products away from heat and out of direct sunlight. A cool, dark place is the best location to store these.

It’s always better to be prepared in any given situation. We encourage you to follow these practices to minimize the risk of a fire. If your home and valuables are damaged by smoke, soot or fire, we will come along side you and restore it back to normal!

Summer Celebrations | Helpful Tips

7/3/2019 (Permalink)

Summer barbecues and celebrations are now upon us in Vero Beach! We, along with American Red Cross, care about your safety while you are out having fun. Found below, we have provided tips and precautions by American Red Cross for when your plans may include fireworks or outdoor grilling.

Fireworks

The safest way to enjoy fireworks is at a public firework show put on by professionals.

If you decide to set off your own at home, we recommend you follow these safety steps:

  • Never give fireworks to small children, and never throw or point a firework toward people, animals, vehicles, structures or flammable materials.
  • Always follow the instructions on the packaging.
  • Keep a supply of water close by as a precaution.
  • Make sure the person lighting fireworks always wears eye protection.
  • Light only one firework at a time and never attempt to relight "a dud."

National Fire Protection Association states that fireworks start an average of 18,500 fires per year, including 1,300 structure fires. These fires cause an average of $43 million in direct property damage.

 Barbecue Safety

  • Always supervise a barbecue grill when in use. Don’t add charcoal starter fluid when coals have already been ignited.
  • Never grill indoors — not in your house, camper, tent or any enclosed area.
  • Make sure everyone, including pets, stays away from the grill.
  • Keep the grill out in the open and away from the house, the deck, tree branches or anything that could catch fire.
  • Use long-handled tools made for cooking on the grill to keep the chef safe.

National Fire Protection Association also tells us that on average, 10,200 home fires are started by grills each year, and July is the peak month for that to happen.

We hope you enjoy your summer, but most importantly, stay safe. SERVPRO at Vero Beach will answer your call anytime at 772-770-0501.

Fire Season Is Upon Us

8/31/2018 (Permalink)

Small brush fire

With these hot temperatures, you will need to be very careful with all of your outdoor activities. If it becomes very hot, windy, and dry it is probably a good idea to limit your outdoor activities that might possibly result in a wildfire. Burning debris and target shooting are a couple activities that need to be rethought if the weather is too hot.

As many as 90% of wild fires in the United States are caused by burning of debris, campfires being left unattended, throwing out cigarettes, and simply people intentionally starting fires, aka arson.

Because of this, wildfires threaten thousands of homes a year.  Just look at poor California right now.  We recommend to

1.       Review your evacuation plan checklist
2.       Ensure that your emergency supply kit is in your vehicle
3.       Cover-up to protect against heat and flying embers. Wear long pants, long sleeve shirts, heavy shoes and boots, and goggles or glasses. 100% cotton is always preferred
4.       Locate your pets and take them with you to safety

Always remember that if you are evacuated and then able to return home to be alert and look over a few things.
1.       Always be alert for downed power lines and other hazards,

2.       Check propane tanks, regulators, and lines before turning on your gas

3.       Check your residence carefully for any hidden embers or smoldering fires

Be safe and have a safe, fun summer.

Our SERVPRO Technicians Work Diligently to Assess the Damage in Your Home After a Fire

7/20/2018 (Permalink)

This house fire was caused by a faulty electrical outlet.

A fire in your Vero Beach home can be a challenging thing to make sense of, let alone to face. With the slew of damages that result from even the smallest of blazes, these lingering effects and acute conditions require immediate attention and a professional’s touch to restore and rebuild properly. Regardless of the size of the fire that started in your house, finding the right professional assistance can make what follows afterward to go much more efficiently.

Once the fire has gotten extinguished in your home, you can begin to take a better look at the fire damage that you face. Fortunately, a thorough inspection and assessment is part of the SERVPRO of Vero Beach process when we are called to give estimates or to provide the necessary information to an insurance provider that has reached out to our company.

This assessment helps our team to better determine the full scope of the present damage and what has to happen to restore your home to preloss conditions. Often our project manager and estimator both assess the damage, working out a running catalogue of damages and equipment necessary to complete this restoration most efficiently.

The estimation itself is often shared with the homeowner but ultimately given to the insurance provider or adjuster, so that the claims process can move along. The sooner that this claim can get processed, the faster that work can begin on your house to bring it back to original conditions. Our SERVPRO of Vero Beach team often works directly with the insurance company representative to save you time and the headache of running necessary paperwork and information back and forth.

As you can see, our team puts a lot of time and effort into making a restoration that your home needs as simple and easy as possible. Returning Your Home To Pre-Fire Condition Is Doable For SERVPRO

7/20/2018 (Permalink)

An apartment fire caused significant damage to the entire unit of an apartment complex.

Most Vero Beach home fire damage does not cause major structural damage, but there is always some physical damage from heat and flames. Most homeowners have to deal with the common, secondary issue created by the local fire department when they extinguish the fire.

The goal of SERVPRO is not just to remediate the fire damage in Vero Beach homes, but also to reduce and hopefully prevent any secondary damage while cleaning up from the original disaster. Our response teams perform both sets of tasks concurrently to ensure we can return each home in its pre-fire condition to every owner as quickly as possible.

Our teams begin by removing structural and personal property to reduce the odors in the home and prevent further contamination from smoke and soot residues. This action includes any scorched items or anything heavily covered in soot and smoke residues. They dispose of all burned items and remove the rest to our offices where specialists use commercial-grade cleaning agents and sound wave generating immersion tanks to remove the extra thick layers of residues.

For items covered in only light-to-medium layers of residues, our technicians remove them to an unaffected area of the home and clean them in place. They can usually accomplish this using dry or wet sponges, and one of the milder cleaning agents in our inventory.

As the cleaning continues, a SERVPRO inspector examines the entry points, walls, and even the roof for damage. For broken windows and doors, team members cover them temporarily with plywood. Depending on the level of damage to the roof or walls, our specialists cover them with plywood or use tarps. Team members accomplish this to not only protect against inclement weather, but to also protect the interior of the home from the rodents, animals, and other pests native to Florida.

After cleaning the home, our team then deodorizes it. Odors can linger for weeks and months after all other damage has been removed or remediated. Technicians can usually eliminate odors with a combination of deodorizing sprays, but if the odors deeply penetrated the wood framing, they use an ozone machine to generate a gas that penetrates to the same level as the original odor and eliminates it.

Stopping and preventing further fire damage is not a short task, but SERVPRO of Vero Beach is here with you at every step of the process. If you have any lingering odors or other problems after a recent fire, call us at (772)770-0501 to begin returning your home to its pre-fire condition and your family back to its normal state as well.

Every fire damage event is a little different, and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our process for the “typical” fire damage emergency.

Step 1: Emergency Contact

The restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us respond immediately with the appropriate equipment and resources.

Step 2: Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment

We carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action.

Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service

Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, we can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs.

Step 4: Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)

The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process.

Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces

We use specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.

Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing

We clean, sanitize, and disinfect all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. We’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.

Step 7: Restoration

Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

VBFD Hard At Work

What you can do until help arrives

After any fire damage situation, your primary focus should be safety first:

  • Is it safe to stay in the house?
  • Electrical and "slip and fall" hazards are some of the most prevalent concerns.
  • Only do activities that are safe for you to perform.
  • Wet materials can be VERY heavy. Be careful!

What To Do After A Fire

  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpets.
  • Keep hands clean so as not to further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  • Place clean towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator and prop doors open.
  • Clean and protect chrome with light coating of petroleum jelly or oil.
  • Wash houseplants on both sides of leaves.
  • Change HVAC filter.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers.

What NOT To Do After A Fire

  • Don't attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces or shampoo carpet or upholstery without contacting us.
  • Don't attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to fire, heat or water without consulting an authorized repair service.
  • Don't use any canned or packaged food or beverages that may have been stored near the fire, heat or water.
  • Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet. The wiring may be damaged.
  • Don't send garments to an ordinary dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set smoke odor.

Holiday And Winter Hazards

12/20/2017 (Permalink)

This house fire literally melted the outside of the home.

The holiday and winter season is here and with it comes shorter days and lower temperatures.  No matter where you live, winter brings a change in the weather.  In a effort to keep our homes and workplaces cozy, many people use alternative hear sources like fireplaces, portable space heaters, and wood burning stoves.  Did you know, heating equipment is a leading cause of home fire deaths?  According to the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment fires cause an estimated $1 billion in direct property damage annually.  Keep the following safety tips in mind to help reduce your risk of heating-related fire.

  1. Keep anything flammable at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or a portable space heater. Have a three foot “kid friendly zone” around open fires and space heaters.
  2. Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.
  3. Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
  4. Always use the right kind of fuel, specified by the manufacturer, for fuel burning space heaters.
  5. Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.
  6. Have a qualified professional install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters or central heating equipment according to the local codes and manufacturer’s instructions.
  7. Test smoke alarms monthly.

50% of all residential heating-related fires are reported during the months of December, January, and February.

Boarded Up Homes Can Be A Fire Hazard

10/24/2017 (Permalink)

Broken Window to Access Fiery Garage

A fire broke out in a residential home and because the house had certain main areas boarded up, they had to break a window to get the water in to douse the flames.  Florida is definitely known as a state where hurricanes pass through often and many residents board up their homes to protect them from potential rain, wind and projectiles.  However, leaving the shutters up for the entire hurricane season is not recommended by the fire department.  It highly reduces the accessibility the firemen have to be able to enter homes to save lives and extinguish the fires more quickly.  I know it may seem like added work to remove shutters and then have to put back on should another storm follow the same track as before, but ones life is definitely worth the hassle.

Lint: Dangerous and Flammable

10/5/2017 (Permalink)

Did you know you can start a fire simply with the lint buildup in your dryer?  I did not know this when I was a college student and it honestly never crossed my mind when I rented a house and with it came a dryer.  Thinking the unit was just old and that was the reason my clothes took two cycles sometimes three to dry, I was surprised when I smelled smoke.  I knew something was on fire and when I opened the laundry room door, smoke billowed out stinking up my whole house.  I was able to shut the device off and clean out the unit the next day because I caught it early.  It now works like a brand new unit.  I know I was fortunate and it could have been a lot worse.  According to Today, today.com dryers should be inspected and cleaned at least once a year.

Vero Beach Property Owner Fire Victims: Act Fast to Mitigate

7/6/2017 (Permalink)

Even after the flames are long gone, fire damages can pose health risks in the form of airborne contaminants. Clean up quickly and thoroughly.

One of the most important considerations is to act fast if your Vero Beach property has experienced a fire. Don't just take our word for it -- take it from the IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification), the leading non-profit organization setting standards on the topic. According to the IICRC:

If a house sustains fire damage, proper cleanup is crucial as the ash, soot and water will wreak havoc on what remains.  It's bad enough there was a fire, but the water and chemicals used to extinguish it can cause secondary damage. The remnants will continue to do damage long after the flames are extinguished.

The average person will attempt conventional cleaning methods like renting a steam cleaner and using common cleaning agents available at the store. Unfortunately, this will barely make an impact on the problem and could cause bigger issues. Chemical agents could react with the residue and cause permanent damage, and in some cases, they may cause toxic fumes.  Fire damage cleanup is one of the most difficult jobs out there, and it should be left to a professional for the best results.

When selecting a firm that does the restoration, consider what type of training they have. Do they have health and safety certifications? Are they experienced in a wide range of repair? Do they have proof of proper insurance and licenses?  The company that has the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) fire and smoke restoration Certified Firm meets all of these expectations and conditions. An IICRC-certified firm understands the need for a quick response.  Immediate action is necessary because the longer the delay, the harder and more costly the job will be as reactions within the damaged material can continue to occur. The fire may be gone, but the ash, soot and smoke odors that remain can continue to do harm.  Certified firms will use their knowledge of fire restoration to accurately test the damage and apply the proper repair techniques to bring the items back to preloss condition when possible.

Also, when hiring an IICRC certified firm you can be sure that they are up to date with the latest technologies and techniques. In order for these firms to keep their certification, they are required to take continuing education programs.  So when confronted with fire damage cleanup, choose an IICRC-certified professional.

Indian River Smoke and Soot Cleanup

5/27/2016 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Vero Beach Home.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Vero Beach will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
