WHEN STORMS OR FLOODS HIT INDIAN RIVER COUNTY SERVPRO OF VERO BEACH IS READY!!

5/30/2023 (Permalink)

As the weather becomes more unpredictable, it's important to be prepared for severe storms that may occur in Indian River County. Whether you're dealing with tornadoes, hurricanes, or floods, you can protect yourself, your family, and your property.

Below SERVPRO of Vero Beach provides valuable tips on staying safe and secure during severe weather.

WEATHER PREPAREDNESS

When severe weather hits, it's essential to be prepared. Here are some tips to help you stay safe and secure during severe weather:

  • Check the National Weather Service website or local news for the latest forecast. Be aware of what severe weather is expected and when it will occur.
  • Have a plan. If you have a family, make sure everyone knows the plan.
  • During severe weather, watch the National Weather Service or your local news for updates on the situation. Have a NOAA Weather Radio to listen to for updates even if power is lost.
  • When severe weather is approaching, protect yourself and your property. Bring any loose items from outside that could become projectiles in high winds. If flooding is expected, take steps to protect your home or business from water damage.

TIPS FOR SEVERE WEATHER PREPARATION

  • Clean out rain gutters and downspouts to ensure proper drainage during storms.
  • Trim trees and shrubs around your home to prevent damage from falling limbs.
  • Secure loose outdoor items like lawn furniture, grills, and toys.
  • Have a plan for where you and your family will go if you need to evacuate your home.
  • Pack an emergency kit with food, water, first-aid supplies, flashlights, and a battery-operated radio.

BUILDING AN EMERGENCY KIT

If severe weather is headed your way, being prepared is important. Here are some ideas for building an emergency kit: Start with the basics: water, food, first-aid supplies, and a flashlight. Customize your kit based on your specific needs. Consider adding prescription medications, extra batteries, a generator, and pet supplies. Make sure everyone in your household knows where the emergency kit is located and how to use the items inside it. Regularly check and update your emergency kit so it's always ready to go when you need it.

WAYS TO STAY SAFE DURING SEVERE WEATHER

  1. Stay indoors as much as possible during severe weather.
  2. Avoid areas prone to flooding or other damage if you must go outside.
  3. Wear appropriate clothing, including sturdy shoes and a waterproof jacket.
  4. Pay attention to local weather reports and warnings and be prepared to take shelter.
  5. Have an emergency kit ready if you lose power or need to evacuate your home
  6. Keep a close eye on animals during severe weather and bring them inside if possible.
  7. Be aware of hazards such as downed power lines and broken glass.

No matter what weather event is the cause, always document any damage with photos so you will have them if you need to file a claim for damages. It is best to consult with your insurance company beforehand to be sure.

Whether facing flash floods, tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, or hurricanes, having a plan in place can minimize damage and ensure the well-being of occupants. From securing windows, stocking emergency kits, and inspecting the property, taking proactive steps can make a significant difference.

Derechos; Straight Storms

8/1/2022 (Permalink)

derecho storm As you can see, the straight storms pass through land like a wall of destruction.

What are Derechos?

Derechos can be simply summarized as strong, straight-line storms that don't cyclone like hurricanes and are commonly accompanied by powerful thunderstorms. The storms are called "derechos" as it means "direct" or "straight ahead" in Spanish. The storm damage is described as "straight line wind damage" as it causes damage comparable to tornadoes, but along a straight line. The wind strength may be inconsistent along the derecho path and the stronger winds are caused by downbursts. Past the devastating winds, derechos have another thing up their sleeves! Derechos are often accompanied by thunderstorms and have hurricane force winds.

What's the risk to us?

Derechos are less common in Florida, but have occurred in the past. As property owners and renters it is important to understand the different risks that can affect our lives and land. Derechos have been called many things in the past, but most importantly, they are dangerous and we all need to be informed and prepared.

Preparing Your Indian River Business for Hurricane Season

5/25/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO storm graphic Our team is available 24/7, we are here to help!

A hurricane making landfall in Indian River County can pose a threat to your commercial property if you are not prepared. Use these tips from FPL to help get prepared for any severe weather that may come:

  • Ensure your employees’ contact information is up-to-date.
  • Have a plan in place to communicate after the storm passes, e.g. set up a telephone number with a recorded message that will be regularly updated to inform employees of the status of company operations following a storm.
  • Consider developing a system to authorize re-entry to company facilities after a storm, e.g. I.D. cards and vehicle permits.
  • Establish a safe area away from exterior glass windows and doors if you plan to take shelter at your business.
  • Determine if your business is in a flood and/or evacuation zone and review the evacuation routes; identify an emergency temporary site, if appropriate.
  • Identify what you need to secure your building and important equipment and who will help; outline specific tasks and conduct a training session.
  • Review your insurance coverage and photograph or record your place of business – inside and outside.
  • Prepare for potential power outages; update the phone number and email address on your FPL account and consider installing a generator.
  • Prepare a list of vendors to provide disaster recovery services.
  • Do not attempt to trim any vegetation growing on or near power lines. Please only hire qualified professionals to trim trees and other vegetation growing near power lines.
  • Make sure outside debris is cleared before a hurricane warning – trash pickup will be suspended.

Does Home Owner’s Insurance Cover Lightning Damage?

5/11/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO pop quiz graphic Lightning causes roughly $451 million dollars of property damage a year. Did you guess correctly?

Generally speaking, yes, homeowner’s insurance will cover damage to your property resulting from a lightning strike. There are three classifications that insurance companies typically use for lightning strike claims.

  • Lightning Strike-This causes the most property damage and is typically the easiest to collect a claim on.
  • Near Miss-This is when lightning strikes near your property but is not a direct hit. This can be harder to collect a claim on since the damage is less obvious.
  • Ground Surge-This is when a lightning strike causes a surge of electricity through an area. Although it is the most common claim, it is one of the most difficult to prove and hardest to collect on.

If your property has damage resulting from a lightning strike SERVPRO of Vero Beach can help! We can not only help restore your property but we can deal with your insurance directly. This can help reduce a significant amount of stress during such a trying time.

What Conditions are Necessary to Form and Sustain a Hurricane?

4/27/2022 (Permalink)

Servpro storm remedition graphic We are here to help with all your storm restoration needs! Our team is available 24/7, 365!

There is an average of 10 named storms each storm season. Roughly half of those storms become hurricanes. Of those hurricanes, half end up making landfall. Hurricanes have a big reputation but are relatively rare occurrences in the scheme of things. This is because all the conditions have to be just right to develop and maintain a hurricane. According to the National Weather Service, there are six widely accepted conditions for hurricane development:

  • The first condition is that ocean waters must be above 26 degrees Celsius (79 degrees Fahrenheit). Hurricanes will not form or weaken rapidly in temperatures below this threshold once they move over the water below. Ocean temperatures in the tropical East Pacific and the tropical Atlantic routinely surpass this threshold.
  • The second ingredient is the distance from the equator. Without the spin of the earth and the resulting Coriolis force, hurricanes would not form. Since the Coriolis force is at a maximum at the poles and a minimum at the equator, hurricanes can not form within 5 degrees latitude of the equator. The Coriolis force generates a counterclockwise spin to low pressure in the Northern Hemisphere and a clockwise spin to low pressure in the Southern Hemisphere.
  • The third ingredient is that of a saturated lapse rate gradient near the center of rotation of the storm. A saturated lapse rate ensures latent heat will be released at a maximum rate. Hurricanes are warm-core storms. The heat hurricanes generate is from the condensation of water vapor as it convectively rises around the eyewall. The lapse rate must be unstable around the eyewall to ensure rising air parcels will continue to rise and condense water vapor.
  • The fourth and one of the most important ingredients is that of low vertical wind shear, especially in the upper level of the atmosphere. Wind shear is a change in wind speed with height. Strong upper-level winds destroy the structure of the storm by displacing the warm temperatures above the eye and limiting the vertical accent of air parcels. Hurricanes will not form when the upper-level winds are too strong.
  • The fifth ingredient is high relative humidity values from the surface to the mid-levels of the atmosphere. Dry air in the mid-levels of the atmosphere impedes hurricane development in two ways. First, dry air causes the evaporation of liquid water. Since evaporation is a cooling process, it reduces the warm core structure of the hurricane and limits the vertical development of convection. Second, dry air in the mid-levels can create what is known as a trade wind inversion. This inversion is similar to sinking air in a high-pressure system. The trade wind inversion produces a layer of warm temperatures and dryness in the mid-levels of the atmosphere due to the sinking and adiabatic warming of the mid-level air. This inhibits deep convection and produces a stable lapse rate.
  • The sixth ingredient is that of a tropical wave. Often hurricanes in the Atlantic begin as a thunderstorm complex that moves off the coast of Africa. It becomes what is known as a mid-tropospheric wave. If this wave encounters favorable conditions such as stated in the first five ingredients, it will amplify and evolve into a tropical storm or hurricane. Hurricanes in the East Pacific can develop by a mid-tropospheric wave or by what is known as a monsoonal trough.

How To Prepare for Power Outages in Your Vero Beach, FL Home

3/30/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO graphic with the words "BE READY" There is confidence in preparation.

With almost half the year dedicated to storm season, storms are a very normal part of living on the Treasure Coast. Regular storms mean there is a higher risk of secondary issues such as power outages. Power outages are unpredictable and inconvenient. Below are some ways to prepare that can help in the event of a power outage according to Ready.gov.

  • Take an inventory now of the items you need that rely on electricity.
  • Talk to your medical provider about a power outage plan for medical devices powered by electricity and refrigerated medicines. Find out how long medication can be stored at higher temperatures and get specific guidance for any medications that are critical for life.
  • Plan for batteries and other alternatives to meet your needs when the power goes out.
  • Sign up for local alerts and warning systems. Monitor weather reports.
  • Install carbon monoxide detectors with battery backup in central locations on every level of your home.
  • Determine whether your home phone will work in a power outage and how long battery backup will last.
  • Review the supplies that are available in case of no power. Have flashlights with extra batteries for every household member. Have enough nonperishable food and water.
  • Use a thermometer in the refrigerator and freezer so that you can know
    the temperature when the power
    is restored.
  • Keep mobile phones and other electric equipment charged and gas tanks full.

What is the Difference Between a Hurricane Watch and Warning?

3/16/2022 (Permalink)

Graphic image of home during storm with the text "24/7 Storm Damage Clean Up" Our team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Although Florida is known as the “Sunshine State”, not every day is sunny and bright. Florida experiences a yearly hurricane season that runs from June 1 to November 30. During hurricane season “watches” and “warnings” are often issued to ensure public safety.

According to NOAA a “hurricane watch” indicates that hurricane conditions are possible within a designated area. Hurricane watches are usually issued 48 hours in advance of the anticipated onset. NOAA recommends you “prepare your home and review your plan for evacuation in case a hurricane or tropical storm warning is issued. Listen closely to instructions from local officials.”

A “hurricane warning” means that hurricane conditions are expected within the designated area. Hurricane warnings are usually issued 36 hours in advance of the anticipated onset. NOAA recommends you “complete storm preparations and immediately leave the threatened area if directed by local officials.”

Your safety is our priority, please follow all directions given by local officials. Once the storm has passed if your property has storm damage SERVPRO of Vero Beach is ready with a team of certified restoration technicians.

Storm Damage vs. Flood Damage in your Sebastian, FL Property

3/9/2022 (Permalink)

Water puddled on floor of a dining room from rain water that seeped in. Our technician is seen here extracting rain water that seeped in to this home after a flash flood.

Often flood damage and storm damage are thought of as the same, however, insurance companies view them very differently. Differentiating between the two types of damages can be tricky.

Insurance companies typically label the loss as storm damage if the destruction was a result of one or more of the following:

  • Heavy rainfall
  • Cyclones and tornadoes
  • Hail storms
  • Hurricanes and other tropical storms

The Insurance Code of Practice defines flood damage as "the covering of normally dry land by water that has escaped or been released from the normal confines of any lake, river, creek or other natural watercourse, whether or not altered or modified, or any reservoir, canal or dam."

We always recommend speaking with your agent and making sure your property is covered for both to prevent you from spending thousands of dollars in property damages down the road.

Tips for Safely Evacuating Before a Storm

2/14/2022 (Permalink)

Roof of home damaged from storm We can help with all your storm remediation and restoration needs. Our team is available 24/7 to help!

Here are 7 safety tips to get you evacuation ready for a storm disaster:

  • Know the flood risk in your area.Check flood maps for your property’s risk. Also, note the topography of the surrounding area. Where are rivers, creeks, high areas, and low areas?
  • Know evacuation routes and alternatives. Check local authorities for existing routes. Increase your flood safety by anticipating areas that may be impassible such as small creeks that could channel larger amounts of water, low areas, and bridges.
  • Know your destination.Have enough supplies to reach your destination and make sure your family knows where to find you.
  • Keep your car filled with gas.You won’t have time to wait in line at a gas station when evacuating, or worse, risk not getting gas due to a shortage from demand in the local area.
  • Keep emergency cash ready. ATMs will have long lines and quickly run out of cash.
  • Keep a “go bag” so you can leave fast.Having some personal items as well as non-perishable food, water, and medications in a bag is a great way to prepare for a fast departure.
  • Make a communication plan.Remember that communications can be disrupted during disasters and flood safety includes having a plan for this. Designating a distant friend as a point of contact for your family is best.

Flood safety includes returning home after the floodwaters recede and local authorities determine it is safe. Do not drive through floodwaters and do not go around police barricades, which are there for your safety. You will have a big job ahead of you with cleanup, but a professional remediation company can guide you through the process.

Storm Damage Mitigation vs. Storm Damage Restoration

1/24/2022 (Permalink)

Technician using ride on water extractor in home Our technician is using a ride on water extractor to remove water from this storm damaged home.

Flood Damage Mitigation

Mitigation is the critical first step in any cleanup effort. This process is focused on stopping the damage preventing any further loss. It involves things like:

-removing debris like tree limbs or broken glass
-covering openings in a roof, window, or wall to prevent more water from entering
-removing building contents that may be salvageable
-extracting all water from the property
-sealing off unharmed parts of the property to ensure the water doesn’t spread
-removing affected porous materials, such as drywall and flooring
-ensuring that the entire structure is dried out completely
-disinfecting the property to prevent the spread of mold and bacteria

Mitigation is usually a fairly speedy process. The more quickly mitigation is completed, the less overall damage will need to be restored. This is why mitigation is always the first goal of any flood cleanup company.

Flood Damage Restoration
Restoration cannot begin until mitigation is complete. The goal of restoration is to restore your property to its pre-flood condition. This includes things like inspecting the property, assessing the damage and removing any existing mold; repairing or replacing warped wood or flooring; cleaning and restoring the building’s contents, to the extent possible; and replacing or restoring damaged drywall and insulation. While mitigation is a relatively quick process, restoration can take a considerable amount of time, depending on the extent and nature of the damage.

Examples of Damage Storms Can Cause to Your Indian River Property

12/22/2021 (Permalink)

Historic Museum with Drying Equipment Set up for Storm Damage mitigation SERVPRO of Vero Beach specializes in commercial and residential storm remediation.

Indian River County can experience several kinds of storm damage; including wind, flood, and hail damage. Consider the following tips should your home or business be hit with storm damage.

Wind Damage Restoration

High winds can often cause severe wind damage, placing your property at risk. Your roof is particularly susceptible as strong winds may cause flying debris to hit or lift it. Because a roof leak may not be evident until the next storm hits, roof damage can be highly challenging to home and business owners alike.

Roof Leaks

Roof leaks and roof damage is often difficult to detect. Storms may loosen the roof without creating a problem that is easily visible. Even small roof leaks can produce damp, moldy conditions inside your home or business. The professional technicians at SERVPRO of Vero Beach can assist homeowners or business owners in receiving a comprehensive roof assessment and roof repair services when wind damage strikes.

Flood Damage

Heavy rains and flooding may cause water damage from many miles away. If the land around your home or business cannot absorb the additional water, flooding will occur. Even houses and shops at higher elevations can sustain flood damage.

Hail Damage & Recovery

Hail can damage not just your roof, but also exterior walls and any detached buildings. Dents, nicks, and cracks on the roof are areas where hail has damaged the exterior of your home. These weakened areas can lead to other more extensive problems like water damage.

If you suspect potential damage to your home or business, contact the professionals SERVPRO of Vero Beach. We will dispatch a team of highly qualified technicians for an immediate assessment of your property and provide mitigation/restoration efforts.

Keeping Your Pets Safe During Storm Season

12/22/2021 (Permalink)

stuffed animal with food from chik fil a From our family to yours we encourage you to stay safe during the next storm season. Our team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to help!

Florida’s rainy season can bring very unpredictable weather patterns and unique dangers including flash flooding and hurricanes. We want to help keep your fur babies safe by making sure that you have a pet safety plan in place.

Here are some ideas to help keep your pets comfortable and safe during the rainy season.

  • Keep your pets inside. When weather strikes, a pet can become frightened quickly. So, secure all pet doors and, should you need to take your pet outside, ensure that all outside gates are firmly closed.
  • Some pet families consider putting a tight shirt on their pet to reduce anxiety.
  • Give them a safe place to wait for the storm out where they feel secure. Providing them with some of their favorite toys or treats may help ease their anxiety.
  • Create an emergency pet kit with a leash, food, bowls, fresh water, and any medications or important medical records. This can be kept near the front door or in your car.
  • When walking your dog after a storm, make sure that your pets are kept on a leash and out of washes and fast running water as heavy rains can lead to flash flooding.
  • Heavy winds can lead to sharp debris that may injure pets. Make sure to clear any hazards from your yard before letting pets out again.
  • Address storm-related anxieties with pets by creating positive associations with storms by giving them treats, toys, and verbal praise for appropriate behavior.

Rainy season can be an unsettling time for pet owners and pets alike. This is why we encourage you to make a plan before rainy season hits to alleviate any added stress.

What is a “Flood Cut”?

9/24/2021 (Permalink)

Hallway with drywall cut out to allow SERVPRO equipment access for drying. The water line determines how far up the drywall will need to be removed in the event a flood cut is necessary.

: A flood cut marks the spot 12 inches above the water damage to tell water damage restoration specialists where to begin when they tear out damaged walls.

Is a Flood Cut Necessary?
While flood cuts are common when businesses have taken on water damage, in certain circumstances, replacing the wall can be avoided. The walls may be salvageable if the following conditions exist:

The water that caused the flooding is clean water.

The walls are not insulated.

There is no sign of mold spreading into the wall.

If all these conditions are met, it is possible that technicians can drill small holes in the wall and use industrial dryers to prevent further damage. If, however, the water in question holds the possibility of contamination, everything it touches must be removed and replaced. As insulation cannot be dried and used effectively after it has been wet, it must be replaced as well.

How Does a Flood Cut Help?
Measuring a whole foot above where the visible damage lies might seem like overkill at first. However, when it comes to flood damage and the potential complications it poses, you will probably agree that it is better to be safe than sorry. To ensure that every inch of your business is protected from mold growth and contamination, restoration professionals remove any drywall and insulation that might have been affected.

Hail Facts, According to the National Weather Service

9/15/2021 (Permalink)

Shingle roof with hail damage Here you can see damage left behind after a hail storm.

HOW IT FORMS:

Inside thunderstorms are warm updrafts and cold downdrafts. When a water drop is lifted, it can carry to temperatures below 32 degrees, freeze and then fall. As it falls it can thaw as it moves into warmer air, where it can get picked up again by another updraft, returning it to cold air where it refreezes. With each trip above and below freezing, it adds a layer of ice before it ultimately falls to earth as hail.

BIGGEST EVER

The largest recorded hailstone in the U.S. was nearly as big as a volleyball and fell on July 23, 2010, in Vivian, South Dakota. It was 8 inches in diameter and weighed almost 2 pounds.

DAMAGE DONE

Hail causes about $1 billion damage to crops and property annually. A hailstorm that hit Kansas City on April 10, 2001, was the costliest ever in the U.S., causing about $2 billion damage. If a strong storm roars through, you may find your siding damaged by hail and shingles that the wind ripped off the roof. Homeowners insurance typically covers wind damage. Coverage also usually includes damage from hail, wind-driven rain or snow that gets inside the home when a roof or wall is damaged due to wind. Most policies also offer some coverage for fallen trees that damage your home, provided the tree broke because of a storm or wind.

Why is Flood Insurance Important?

9/2/2021 (Permalink)

Two SERVPRO technicians taking moisture readings and inputting the information into DryBook. : All drying and remediation data is uploaded directly from the jobsite to keep the insurance companies up to date on progress.

To control costs, many homeowners opt out of or do not purchase flood insurance, but this can be a crucial misstep. Flood damage is one of the leading causes of financial hardship among homeowners. Whether or not your home sustains flood damage during a storm depends on the size of the storm, its direction of travel, and where your home is positioned relative to other buildings in the neighborhood. If your property lies at the end of a street or a slightly lower elevation than the surrounding area, you may be at high risk of flood damage. However, in the event of a catastrophic storm, the entire town could be flooded at once. Flood damage can cost thousands to repair. Floods with safety hazards may incur extra costs, as well. Since Florida is prone to flooding we always recommend that homeowners opt for the extra coverage. A slight extra premium each month can save you from footing a substantial bill the next time a hurricane comes around. What is and is not covered by your insurance may vary depending on your provider and contract, so be sure to get in touch with an insurance representative to learn where your coverage may be lacking.

How Storm Damage Differs From Other Types of Water Damage

6/29/2021 (Permalink)

Carpet in room with water stains Water leaked from the ceiling onto the carpet of this Vero Beach, FL home during a rain storm.

There is always a risk that your property may incur damage if the weather becomes severe. Storm damage is not the same as other water damage, for this reason, you may not be aware of how to properly deal with it.

  • Why is flood damage different from other types of water damage? The reason that flood water is different from others is largely due to how it accumulates. While most water damage, such as that from leaks or broken pipes, comes from above, the water in a flood rises from the ground. As it does, it becomes category 3 water.
  • What is “Category 3” water? When it comes to water contamination, there are three categories. Category 3 or black water, which includes water from a flood, has the highest levels of contamination. Because this water comes up from the ground, it mixes with dirt, debris and sewage. When this happens, it begins to carry waste, bacteria and harmful chemicals that can be hazardous to your health.
  • How should you handle damage from storm water? Because flood water is highly contaminated, it is not a good idea to try removing it on your own. Instead, you should hire a professional to thoroughly clean and sanitize the building. Any food or beverages that have been in contact with this water should be thrown away as they are no longer safe to consume. Protective gear should be worn at all times while handling category 3 water.

If your property has been affected by storm water, it is important to have it taken care of right away to prevent secondary damage. SERVPRO of Vero Beach can sanitize the area, perform necessary repairs and salvage many affected items. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!

Stay Hurricane Ready with Survival Essentials

6/9/2021 (Permalink)

Cooler packed with hurricane survival supplies. Every year in May hurricane supplies are tax free, this is the best time to shop and take advantage of savings!

As we all know, hurricanes can be one of the most devastating types of natural disasters. When a big storm is in the forecast, everyone who lives anywhere near the hurricane that's on its way should have a disaster plan ready. What to Know About Water Extraction After a Flood Damages Your Vero Beach, FL Home

3/15/2021 (Permalink)

Drying equipment stacked up in a warehouse In this image you can see some of the drying equipment we use for water losses.

In Florida rainy conditions can cause water to flood outside, eventually finding its way into your Vero Beach home. It is important to know: the longer your contents and building materials stay wet, the more catastrophic issues can become. For example, depending on the ambient conditions, mold begins growing within the first 72 hours after a water loss. This is why the first step we take in the remediation process, upon arriving to a water damaged home is extraction. It is vital to remove as much excess water as possible. Some of the tools we use for extraction include:

  • Portable Extractors: We can use portable extraction units to get into tight places where moisture is hiding.
  • Heavy-Duty Truck-Mounted Extractors: We can utilize our truck-mounted machines to give us more power when extracting water from your house.
  • Handheld Extraction Tools: When we are removing liquid from smaller items such as your couch or a recliner chair, we can use handheld tools to extract tight spots and uneven surfaces.
  • Weighted Extraction Tools: When removing moisture from thick carpets, we can utilize extraction tools that use the weight of the operator to compress the carpeting.
  • Sump Pumps: If there are more than two inches of standing water in any part of your house, we can hook up a submersible pump that pulls water out of your building and into a sewage drain.

Some of the ways we can remove moisture from structural components, such as drywall or subfloors, include:

  • Air Movers: We can set up air movers so that they push air in a circular motion to speed up the natural evaporation process.
  • Circular Fans: We can set up box fans that can push a large amount of air in a short period.
  • Dehumidifiers: We can set up dehumidifiers that pullmoisture from the air and dispense warm, dry air to be used in the circulation created by the air movers.

If you notice water in your due to flooding after a storm, call SERVPRO of Vero Beach at 772-770-0501. We are here to help!

How Does SERVPRO of Vero Beach Prevent Cross Contamination in Your Vero Beach, FL Home?

3/3/2021 (Permalink)

Water in living room that seeped into the house from outdoor rain. Our phones are operated round the clock to assist you with flood damage in your Vero beach home.

As we enter in to spring season rain is inevitable. With that, your home or property may be at risk of water damage. For example, road overflow from heavy rainfall could result in significant quantities of contaminated water entering the ground levels of your property. Since contaminated materials may be involved, our technicians may require you to evacuate affected areas of the home, or even the whole property itself. SERVPRO of Vero Beach’s technicians are trained to spot the presence of contaminants in water. Containment of the emergency is essential to avoiding cross-contamination. Cross-contamination is difficult to stop and can be spread on clothing, footwear, or through airborne particles. SERVPRO of Vero Beach utilizes plastic barriers to contain the affected area and can apply negative air pressure when necessary. After establishing a quarantine zone, you cannot enter the area unless you are wearing personal protective equipment (PPE.) We do this to ensure that harmful pathogens do not come into contact with noncontaminated areas. In some cases, the water is so contaminated it is considered “Black water”. In the case of blackwater, there are significantly more items that are considered unsalvageable. Structural materials like insulation, sheetrock, and some woods must be removed and disposed of properly. Contact SERVPRO of Vero Beach at (772) 770-0501 for emergency assistance. We have a full staff of experienced technicians, on-call, to assist you and your property in an emergency. Our phones are operated round the clock to assist you with flood damage in your Vero beach home.

Why Is It Important to Quickly Extract Storm Water in Your Vero Beach Property?

2/23/2021 (Permalink)

Man standing on top of ride-on water extractor. SERVPRO of Vero Beach utilizes many different types of water extraction equipment. The one seen in this image is called a rover.

The most important factor in minimizing the severity of loss from large amounts of water is quick extraction. This is because a speedy and thorough extraction reduces the amount of damage water may have on different building materials. The difference between water removal from a professional remediation company versus a DIY effort is the amount of water that is extracted. Consumer-grade wet/dry vacuums simply don’t have the same extraction abilities as the equipment that we use at SERVPRO of Vero Beach. Water that has been left to soak into flooring and dry wall too long increases the likelihood of needing a controlled demolition removal. A controlled demolition refers to an action that only removes damaged portions of walls, floors, and other building materials as a loss and to open those areas for complete drying. This is why SERVPRO of Vero Beach’s teams are available to perform remediation services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our IICRC certified technicians are equipped with the skills and equipment to make the storm damage in your property "Like it never even happened."

Each year in Florida homeowners are faced the possibility of flooding. Our high moisture levels in the soil coupled with torrential down falls are ideal factors for flooding. You can’t stop a flood from happening, but you can minimize the impact that flood water has on your property. The best thing you can do if you think you live in a flood zone is to have a plan of action in advance. Here is a list of things to consider:

  • Store all important documents in a watertight secure container.
  • Have a separate lockbox for jewelry & any other valuables.
  • Invest in Sandbags & Flood Barriers

What Happens to Your Belongings After A Storm Loss?

1/6/2021 (Permalink)

Two men standing in front of a box truck. Greg and Michael are ready to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Storms don’t always affect just the outside structures of your property. Sometimes, storms can make their way into your home and wreak havoc on your belongings. SERVPRO of Vero Beach specializes in restoring contents damaged by storms. Our “restore” vs. “replace” standard helps preserve precious keepsakes that can’t be replaced. After mitigation begins in your home we assess the damage to your contents to determine what items can be restored back to their preloss condition. Once the salvageable contents have been identified, we begin the process by packing out items to transport to our facilities for restoration services. Some methods we use to clean and restore your contents are:

  • Dry Cleaning - Used for cleaning light residues or to pre-clean prior to cleaning.
  • Wet Cleaning - An effective cleaning method for removing moderate to heavy residues.
  • Spray and Wipe -Effective for items that can’t withstand cleaning.
  • Foam Cleaning - Used for upholstery fabrics that might shrink or bleed if cleaned.
  • Abrasive Cleaning - Involves agitation of the surface being cleaned.
  • Immersion Cleaning - Contents are dipped into a bath of the cleaning product.
  • Electronic Cleanup-Electronics will be cleaned and inspected by a qualified electronics technician.
  • Document / Photograph Drying-Depending on the type of documents and the level of water damage, we have five options for the restoration of documents:
    • Air Drying
    • Dehumidification
    • Freezer Drying
    • Vacuum Freeze Drying
    • Vacuum Thermal Drying

SERVPRO of Vero Beach understands that your home is more than a random structure. It is the holding place for memories and keepsakes that transform a house into a home. If you have any questions on how we can help, call us at 772-770-0501.

What To Do After The Storm Has Passed

12/21/2020 (Permalink)

Man inputting information on iPad while another man sets up drying equipment. Our technicians work together to come up with an comprehensive remediation plan for your property.

A storm can strike at any time, sometimes leaving behind unexpected damage. It can be very confusing for homeowners to know what to do afterwards. Here are some tips to help guide you during the remediation process:

  • Your safety is always the number one priority. Only enter your property if it is safe to do so. If there are downed power lines, gas leaks, or the structure of your home is unstable DO NOT ENTER. If everything checks out, still wear appropriate shoes to avoid any sort of injuries from broken glass, exposed nails, etc.
  • Assuming you can safely enter the property, take pictures and create a list of what has been damaged. You might need it for insurance purposes later. Contact your insurance agent and tell them what happened. Remember that most insurance policies limit the time to file a claim.
  • Call us at SERVPRO of Vero Beach to inspect the damage and provide an estimate to get your home to its pre-damaged condition.

Signs of Hail Damage to Your Indian River Property

11/24/2020 (Permalink)

Below are some key signs to look for when inspecting your property for hail damage:

  • Roofing tiles or granules of shingles appear towards the base of gutter downspouts
  • Surface-level dents or other damage on the roof, windows, or siding

Tornado Safety in Vero Beach, FL

11/1/2020 (Permalink)

Tornado in the distance in a field. Tornadoes have touched down in every continent except Antarctica.

According to the National Weather Service Florida, has the second highest average tornado count per year compared to the rest of the country. Florida’s tornadoes tend to be less destructive than the tornadoes produced in the infamous “Tornado Alley”. However, it is still important to have a safety plan in place in case you find yourself in the path of a tornado. Typically, a tornado warning is given when a funnel is indicated by radar or sighted. You should take shelter IMMEDIATELY. Some things to keep in mind when finding shelter shelters are:

  • Avoid windows- flying glass can injure or worse, kill. Also, do not waste time opening windows. It is a myth that the home will “explode” if you don’t open the windows.
  • Shelter low- find a spot in the lowest floor possible, basements are not common in Florida, but ideal for tornadoes. Try to find a small room in the center of the structure with no windows. Perhaps a closet or bathroom.
  • Add protection- shelter under something like a mattress or blanket to protect yourself from debris.
  • Do not stay in a mobile home, they cannot withstand tornado force winds, even with secure tie-downs. It’s safer to lie flat in a ditch or ravine and put your arms over your head. This applies if you are in a vehicle as well.

By following these suggested safety tips, you can increase your chances for survival. If you experience any property damage, we’re here to help.

Hurricane Damage by Category

8/6/2020 (Permalink)

Diagram of a home with tips to prepare for a hurricane. Here are some tips for hurricane preparations.

In Florida the most common and reoccurring natural disaster is a hurricane. However, no two hurricanes are alike. Its strength will determine the level of destruction it leaves behind. A hurricane’s strength is classified by categories. Below are the five categories and what you can expect:

  • Category 1: Wind speeds range between 74-95mph. Damage tend to be minor with the potential for small trees to be uprooted from the ground and branches snapping off of trees.  Power outages are also very common in this category.
  • Category 2: Wind speeds range between 96-110 mph. It can cause moderate damage to your property. Includes damage from a Cat 1 hurricane as well as roof, gutter, and siding issues on homes.
  • Category 3: Wind speeds range from 111-129 mph. Categories 3-5 are classified as “major threats”. Includes damage from Cats 1&2 as well as potential loss of the roof deck (the base of your roof not just the shingles), flooding and electric/water outages after the storm.
  • Category 4: Wind speed range from 130-156 mph. Includes the damages from Cats 1-3 as well as complete detachments of roof and sidings, uprooting of large trees and knocked down power lines.
  • Category 5: Wind speeds are 157+ mph. Extremely dangerous and generally requires compete evacuations. Includes damages from Cats 1-4 as well as a potential of complete home destruction. Flooding, power outages, road blocks, and damaged homes often leave communities uninhabitable for months.

It is critical during any hurricane that you always follow the instructions of your local authorities and make all preparations necessary to preserve life and property.

Protecting Yourself from Lightning During a Vero Beach Storm

5/22/2020 (Permalink)

Night time image of a lightning storm above a residential area Fun Fact: Lightning is hotter than the surface of the sun and can reach temperatures of up to 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Did you know Florida is the lightning capital of the US? Interestingly, lightning is the third leading cause of storm-related deaths in the United States. It creates nearly one billion dollars in damage per year. The following guide and tips can help you and your loved ones stay safe and secure should you be caught in a lightning storm.

  • How Should I Protect Myself?

There is no safe place outside during a lightning storm. If thunderstorms are expected, you should stop any outdoor activities quickly and seek shelter indoors or in a hardtop vehicle. If you absolutely cannot get to safety, try to stay away from open fields, hilltops, tall trees or other tall objects. Find the lowest place possible and squat in a baseball catcher’s position your heels touching, ears covered, and head between your knees. Minimize contact with the ground and do NOT lie flat. Avoid water and anything metal, such as golf clubs or bicycles.

  • What if I am Driving?

Stay in the vehicle until the storm subsides. Avoid touching metal or other surfaces that can conduct electricity.

  • What if I am Indoors?

Once the storm begins, do not touch any electrical equipment with cords, including corded phones--it is okay to use cellular or cordless phones during the storm. Stay away from windows and doors and do not go on porches.

  • What if My House is Hit by Lightning?

If you think your home has been struck by lightning call 911 immediately and evacuate if you see fire or smoke. You may want to ask your local fire department to check for hot spots in your walls. If you use gas for heating and cooking, contact your gas company or a licensed contractor to conduct a leak test before re-entering your home. Gas system components have been known to sustain punctures as a result of direct or nearby lightning strikes.

If you have experienced damage to your home from smoke or fire caused by lightning strike, give our office a call at 772-770-0501. We are here to help!

Flood Preparedness-Part 2

3/13/2020 (Permalink)

Flooded street with a white home in the background and small patch of green grass on the right hand side Knowledge is power! The more you prepare beforehand the more confident you will feel making decisions if you ever encounter a flood.

In our last post we touched on some of the ways you can prepare yourself and home for a flood. Now let’s talk about what to do if you’re ever caught in a flood.

  • Tune into NOAA Weather Radio, EAS, or a local alerting system for emergency instructions.
  • If you are told to evacuate do so immediately. First responders will usually aid in directing evacuating traffic. If so, do not drive around barricades, follow the route they have set up.
  • Do not attempt to drive through, walk, or swim through flood waters. It’s force can be stronger than it appears. As the popular saying goes “Turn around, don’t drown!”.
  • Stay off bridges as the rushing water under it could wash the bridge away without warning.
  • If you find yourself in your vehicle and trapped in rapidly moving water stay inside. If water is rising inside then you should seek refuge on the roof.
  • If you are in a building go to the highest level. However, never climb into a closed attic you could become trapped by rising water. If absolutely necessary seek refuge on the roof. You should signal for help once there.

Being caught in the chaos of a natural disaster can be scary. It is important to remain as calm as possible so you can make rational lifesaving decisions.

Flood Preparedness-Part 1

3/6/2020 (Permalink)

Clip board with disaster supply checklist and flashlights, batteries, and canned foods in the background It is important to make sure you are prepared for anything. A checklist will help keep you organized and ensure that you have everything you need.

Spring is just around the corner and just as the saying “April showers bring May flowers.”  insinuates, rain is on its way! This month we will begin a series to discuss all things flood. We will cover from how to prepare to what steps to take after a flood has occurred.

Flooding is common during the spring months because of melting snow and increased rain showers. Here are a few things you can do to prepare this month for the coming spring showers.

  • Visit FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center to find out if you live in a flood zone.
  • Come up with and practice an evacuation plan including: flash flood response, evacuations routes, and shelter plans.
  • Talk with your insurance adjuster about obtaining or renewing a flood insurance policy.
  • Keep important documents and items (such as an extra supply of RX medication, charging devices, extra batteries, etc.) in a water proof container.
  • Check to make sure your drains and gutters are clean and free of debris.

Check back next week to find out what you can do to ensure you are safe DURING a flood.

Do's and Don'ts Guideline After a Storm

2/13/2020 (Permalink)

On February 5 we celebrated National Weatherperson’s Day. National Weatherperson’s day celebrates all individuals in the fields of meteorology, broadcast meteorology, forecasting, volunteer storm spotters/observers, and any others that work in the weather field.

At SERVPRO of Vero Beach, we have a special appreciation for our local Weatherpersons. We monitor the weather closely throughout the year to stay in the know about any potential storms in the horizon. While most storms are minor and cause no harm there are some that, despite proper preparation, can cause unexpected damage to your property. Should this ever happen to you, these are some of the do’s and don’ts after calling our office while you wait for a storm team to arrive:

  • Remove excess water by mopping and blotting.
  • Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removal of lamps and tabletop items.
  • Remove and prop wet upholstery and cushions.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  • Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying in summer.
  • Remove colored rugs from wet carpeting.
  • Remove art objects to a safe, dry place.
  • Gather loose items from floors.
  • Don't leave wet fabrics in place. Hang furs and leather goods.
  • Don't leave books, magazines or other colored items on wet carpet or floors.

At SERVPRO of Vero Beach we understand that damages resulting from a storm can be very stressful. By following the steps listed above you are helping expedite the remediation process thus reducing the risk of further damage to your property.

Wood Flooring | This or That

11/12/2019 (Permalink)

brown wood flooring Take your Pick!

With many new trends and styles, we often see people updating and remodeling their homes. Along with this comes new flooring too. Depending on where you live, how often you get storms, your living situation along with financial budgets can help guide you in the decision making process. There are currently two kinds of wood flooring that people are buying, hardwood and laminate wood.

Laminate wood is made up of composite wood pressed together and is topped off with the image of hardwood. It’s cost for the product and installation both are fairly inexpensive compared to hardwood. It is very durable and can take on the dog’s nails, the kid’s toys that you asked them to keep outside and other daily wear and tear. And another great thing is that it can endure moisture and minor water problems.

On the other hand, hardwood floors are natural and very beautiful. Because it comes from real trees, it is more expensive along with the installation cost too. Therefore, this would add value to your home. Unfortunately, it is not known for great durability. After a while, scratches appear and if there is an accumulation of water in one area, those pieces would have to be replaced.

Now that you have more information, you know what to expect when you go look at wood flooring for your home!

Foreseeable Storms

9/16/2019 (Permalink)

map of Humberto storm tracking to come near east coast of USA. Hurricane Season

There are 4 potential tropical cyclones in the Atlantic Ocean that could potentially bring impacts to the United States.

Potential Tropical Cyclone #9:

This system is located in the northern Caribbean which is the area affected by Hurricane Dorian recently. Dorian helped to lower the sea surface temperature due to upwelling which will inhibit rapid strengthening of Potential Tropical Cyclone #9.

#1:

An area of low pressure located in the eastern Gulf of Mexico is organized and could impact the Texas Gulf Coast this weekend. I don’t expect this system to cause major impacts but there could be some tropical storm force winds along the gulf and high wave action.

 #2:

Still located in the central Atlantic, this system will continue to track west and could potentially impact the United States in about 10 days or so. It is possible #2 could recurve back into the central Atlantic before reaching the United States.

#3:

Trailing behind #2, this system will likely develop as well and will need to be monitored. Too far out to predict where this system will go.

Be Ready | Hurricane Preparation

8/5/2019 (Permalink)

A hurricane is a powerful natural disaster, don't allow it to devastate your home due to lack of preparation!

The two keys to weather safety is to PREPARE for the risks and to ACT on those preparations when alerted by emergency officials.

Before a Hurricane:

  • To begin, you should build an emergency kit and make a family communications plan.
  • Know your surroundings
  • Learn the elevation level of your property and whether the land is flood-prone.
  • Learn hurricane evacuation routes of Vero Beach and how to find higher ground.
  • Make plans to secure your property
  • Cover all of your home's windows
  • Install straps or additional clips to securely fasten your roof to the frame structure.
  • Be sure trees and shrubs around your home are well trimmed so they are more wind resistant.
  • Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts.
  • Reinforce your garage
  • Plan to bring in all outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans and anything else that is not tied down.
  • Determine how and where to secure your boat.
  • Install a generator for emergencies.
  • If in a high-rise building, when high winds are present, be prepared to take shelter on a lower floor because wind conditions increase with height, and in a small interior room without windows.
  • Consider building a safe room.

Preparing for Disaster: Earthquakes

5/15/2019 (Permalink)

Be prepared for an earthquake!

Earthquakes can happen anywhere at any time. Many people don’t know this, but most of the U.S. is at a moderate to high risk for earthquakes. That is why it is important to prepare.

TIPS TO PREPARE FOR AN EARTHQUAKE

-Properly mount all wall decor to avoid extra injury.

-Make sure all heavy items are away from beds and couches to lessen the chance of injury.

-Secure all light fixtures.

-Have an emergency kit ready and easily accessible.

-Do practice drills with your family, so everyone knows safe areas and how to drop, cover, and hold.

TIPS TO HELP DURING AN EARTHQUAKE

-Try to stay calm.

-Stay away from anything that can shatter, such as windows or glass.

-Drop, cover, and hold onto something sturdy.

-If you are indoors, stay inside until the shaking stops, then exit with stairs, not elevators.

-If you are outdoors, find a spot with nothing above you, drop to the ground, and stay until the shaking stops.

-If you are in a car, keep your seatbelt on, and pull over to an open area, avoiding bridges, power lines, and street lights if possible. Stay until the shaking stops, then drive with caution.

TIPS TO HELP AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE

-Aftershocks can occur anytime after an earthquake, so be cautious. If there is an aftershock, drop, cover, and hold on just as if it were another earthquake.

-Clean up any flammable liquids or spilled medications as soon as possible.

-Be careful when opening closet doors or drawers, because some things may have shifted.

-Stay updated and informed through the news or radio.

Preparing for Disaster: Flooding

4/24/2019 (Permalink)

Be prepared for flooding!

Flooding can be a very frequent natural disaster. In the event of a flood, you'll want to make sure you are prepared.

TIPS FOR PREPARING BEFORE A FLOOD

Make sure to…

-Be ready to evacuate at any time, and have an emergency kit ready to go with you and your family.

-Stay out of floodwaters! Any flowing water that is above your ankles is not a safe route.

-Head towards higher ground in the event of a flash flood warning.

-Stay alert, especially at night time.

Stay informed!

-Not all homeowners insurance covers damages from flooding.

-Stay tuned to the news, or listen to the radio for any updates on flood warnings in your area.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AFTER A FLOOD

If a flood has already happened in your area, here are some tips.

-Stay away from any dangerous areas with floodwater.

-Keep a look out for dangerous animals like snakes that could come into your home with the floodwater.

-Officials will report when it is safe to enter your home.

-Contact the fire department if you hear a hissing noise or smell gas.

-Make sure to wear protective gear when cleaning up to avoid injury.

-Be safe when entering your home, and watch out for collapsed or damaged areas.

-If any food or water has come into contact with floodwater, it is best to throw it away.

Call SERVPRO after a flood for any of your water restoration needs for your home or business.

Storm's First Glance

3/5/2019 (Permalink)

Storm rolling in.

During all the much needed rain here in sunny Florida, there is a possibility of flooding.

Thunderstorms can have devastating effects with high winds, heavy rains and even trees down. When disaster happens know who to call!

Having the SERVPRO of Vero Beach number 772-770-0501 ready will give your home or business a leg up when there is a storm. Mitigating the damage quickly will save time and money on your storm loss.

If the restoration and mitigation efforts begin within the first five hours of the appearance of water in the home or water in the business, the chances of a successful restoration and mitigation of the damage is nearly certain. However, if the water cleanup efforts are delayed past the first 24 hours, it becomes increasingly likely that the property will sustain permanent damage.

DO NOT hesitate to call SERVPRO of Vero Beach!

Knocked Out Power

3/5/2019 (Permalink)

Mold growing on a wall after storm.

After a storm rolled through our area, it knocked out power for days.  Upon restoration of power, this home had blown a fuse so their air never did come back on.  Following weeks of being unoccupied with shutter still up and high humidity, the mold began growing.  We have a particular way to clean mold and unlike many companies, we guarantee our work.  We will provide a pre-test and a post-test.  We will continue to follow up with our clients as well to make sure they are still satisfied in the following weeks.  Mold can be a scary thing to customers, but it is not scary to us.  If you suspect you have mold, do not mess with it.  Instead, call the professionals...us.

Hauling off Debris

3/4/2019 (Permalink)

Debris in one of our dumpsters.

When storms roll through our area, we may have different levels of debris.  Same thing in the mitigation world.  Sometimes we are able to salvage furniture, drywall, etc...  Other times we have to discard most of it if not all of it.  We definitely do our best in trying to salvage as much as possible.  We understand there are certain items that may have sentimental value and will give our honest opinion in what can be saved.  Mold especially when growing rampant, is not merciful.  It loves to grow on what it can.  After a storm it is best to clean up quickly and not give mold a chance to grow.  Drying out immediately is ideal especially in this environment where it can get humid and muggy quick.

Wind, Rain, and Flood

3/1/2019 (Permalink)

Flooded room from storm.

There are times in Florida when storms form unexpectedly.  This is never a good thing if a home owner has a weak roof, leaking windows, or live in low-lying areas.  Water will follow gravity and winds are unpredictable.  When it rains hard for three hours following days of constant rain, the already flooded water simply keep rising.  Home owners around our city are devastated when the rising waters begin to penetrate the house.  Can you imagine how helpless they feel watching it enter their house and not able to stop it?  Many have experienced just this, but were smart to pick the phone up and call SERVPRO of Vero Beach.  We can't stop the rain, but we can make your house feel "Like it never even happened."

Heavy Rains Seep In

8/31/2018 (Permalink)

Recent rains cracked foundation.

This homeowner found water seeping in from a recent storm right away because the damage occurred on the first floor right at the bottom of a highly used stairwell.

Water issues in a location that is a high traffic area allows owners to be more aware of a water loss sooner than in areas of the house where they don’t often go.

Right away the owner pulled up the carpet and pad to dry both of them with all the fans she had in her home.  By doing so she was actually able to dry out the carpet, but the pad still needed to be replaced.

By contacting SERVPRO we were able to give her a FREE evaluation of the damage which helped her from having any secondary damages and prevented mold growth as well.

Hurricane season has arrived

5/17/2018 (Permalink)

Hurricane Irma as it approached Florida a year ago.

If hurricanes, flash floods or other environmental acts are suspected, you may get a bit of a warning before high waters hit. When flooding is suspected for Vero Beach, you want to do whatever you can to get your commercial building ready for the potential damage. You don't always get a warning prior to a flood, so it's a good idea to use this time wisely. Consider using these steps to best prepare for a storm with high waters.

Rearrange Your Equipment and Furniture

If there's a potential for storm damage involving high waters in your area, you want to do what you can to move your important furniture and equipment up high. You can rearrange in a variety of ways, including the following:

* Move as much as possible to upper floors of the building.
* Create stacks of furniture with water-resistant items at the bottom on lower levels of the building.
* Use watertight totes to protect files and equipment.

Moving around office furniture could help you save as much as possible. As you get ready to rearrange your space, think about the items will you be able to easily dry out and clean after a flood. Keep those at the bottom and move other, less water-resistant furniture and equipment first.

Get Sandbags

You can also try to make your building impermeable to flooding. Stacking sandbags near the doors and windows can help keep water from entering your commercial space. You can even build up a wall of sandbags around the perimeter of your building to help keep water away from the foundation.

Flooding can leave your building unrecognizable. That's why commercial building owners want to do what they can to stop water from damaging their building. If you were unable to prepare for flood damage, you can still call in a flood cleanup team to help you fix the problems caused by the high waters.

Torrential Rains

12/20/2017 (Permalink)

Heavy rains during a relentless rain storm.

Sometimes it doesn't take a Hurricane to cause significant damage to your home.  Sometimes it can be afternoon rain storm.  Unprecedented rains earlier this year prove that no place is immune to the power of flood damage after a severe storm.

Homeowners must prepare for the damage flooding does as weather patterns continue to change and storms intensify. Our crews are trained in advanced water restoration techniques, and our equipment is second to none.

After unusually heavy rains the ground around your home saturates, and flood damage occurs in your home. Although the rainwater itself is fairly clean, storm sewers in the area are unable to handle the runoff, and you risk sewage backup as part of the flooding. Anytime large amounts of water, clean or contaminated, invade your home we respond quickly with powerful tools and the know-how of a company that values up to date training in industry best practices for all our workers.

The water that seeps into your lower level may carry landscaping chemicals into your home. Adding to the toxic mix is human and animal waste from the sewer back up. The substances in the flood waters can be infectious and offer a rich growth medium for unwanted microbial activity. SERVPRO’s truck-mounted pumps and extractors collect the contaminated water for disposal according to local regulations. Our staff takes baseline moisture measurements after extraction to locate hidden pockets of water and to help set drying goals.

Next time a storm rolls in call us at SERVPRO VERO BEACH.  We will help you out quickly.  (772)770-0501

Now Is The Time To Prepare

Nasa view of Hurricane Irma

What a summer already!  Storms, Sinkholes, Earthquakes, and Tornadoes have ravaged parts of our country.  If you have been fortunate not to have encountered any of these, I am sure you at least know of someone who has.  To be prepared, now is the time to check your insurance and verify you are covered for all type of storms in your area.  Flooding and earthquakes are usually not covered by most insurance policies so make sure to consider your risk when choosing the appropriate policy for your family.  Also, remember that flood insurance takes days to become effective, so don't wait until a named storm heads your way to try and scramble to add flood to your policy because the storm will most likely arrive before your flood insurance takes effect.  It is always a good idea to check your policy often and have a good understanding of your level of protection.  If you have questions about the right type coverage you should have, you can can find insurance help on this link where non-profit United Policyholders has listed useful information.  uphelp.org
