White man pressing test button on smoke alarm. A quick way to make sure you always replace your batteries in time is to change them during daylight savings while you adjust your clocks.

The U.S. Fire Administration recommends monthly testing of your home's smoke detector. It is recommended that you follow the manufacturers instructions. However, a general testing typically resembles the steps below:

Step 1- Alert all members of the household that you will be testing the smoke alarms.

Step 2- Pick one household member to stand at the furthest point in your home from the detector you are testing. This will ensure that the alarm can be heard throughout the home. If the alarm sounds faint, you may want to add extra detectors.

Step 3- Press and hold the “Test” button on the smoke detector. It may take a few seconds to begin, but you should hear a loud, ear piercing beep. If the sound is faint or nonexistent try replacing the batteries. Smoke detector batteries should be changed every six months.

Step 4- Check smoke detector to make sure there is no dust or other particles blocking the grates.

According to the USFA Smoke detectors have an average life span of 10 years. Always replace your smoke detector every 10 years. Hopefully, taking these steps will help prevent smoke and fire damage in your home. However, if you experience a smoke or fire loss please give our office a call. We are here to help!!
